Both chambers are controlled by Democrats. <a href=\"https:\/\/nmlegis.gov\/Legislation\/Legislation?Chamber=H&#038;LegType=B&#038;LegNo=4&#038;year=23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Legislation<\/a> This bill seeks to enshrine many Democratic-favorable voter policies into law. If passed and signed by the Democrat Governor. According to the bill, convicted felons will be allowed to register to voter after they are released from prison but before they complete parole and probation. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the reentry phase of an inmate\u2019s sentence, if the inmate is a voter or otherwise a qualified elector, the inmate shall be given an opportunity to register to vote or update an existing registration by means of a transaction with the motor vehicle division of the taxation and revenue department prior to the inmate\u2019s release from custody,\u201d The bill is as follows:<\/p>\n<p>Under existing New Mexico law, convicted felons \u201cmust complete probation or parole before registering to vote again,\u201d According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/2567409\/democrats-launch-new-campaign-for-nm-voting-rights-bill.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Albuquerque Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Also included in the measure are changes creating an automatic voter registration system at the state\u2019s driver\u2019s licensing agency, as well as at other state and local government departments. <\/p>\n<p>An identical version of the legislation was also available. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailykos.com\/stories\/2023\/2\/1\/2150340\/-New-Mexico-Democrats-introduce-major-voting-rights-expansion-bill-following-2022-election-victories\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Introduction<\/a> during last year\u2019s legislative session but was filibustered by state Senate Republicans.
