Dianne Feinstein<\/a>D-Calif., used these attacks to call for a renewed federal attack weapons ban. California\u2019s other Democrat senator, Alex Padilla, <a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/2023\/01\/what-do-the-attacks-in-monterey-park-and-half-moon-bay-in-california-have-in-common-very-strict-gun-control-and-virtually-no-one-has-a-concealed-handgun-permit\/\">So called<\/a> For expanded federal background checks on gun purchase.<\/p>\n<p>California already has the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/giffords.org\/lawcenter\/resources\/scorecard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">strictest gun control laws<\/a>\u00a0The country has both of these laws, as well many more. Contrary to Israel and most of the United States, concealed handgun permits are available.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/2023\/01\/what-do-the-attacks-in-monterey-park-and-half-moon-bay-in-california-have-in-common-very-strict-gun-control-and-virtually-no-one-has-a-concealed-handgun-permit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">almost impossible<\/a>\u00a0to get in the counties where California\u2019s attacks occurred. Los Angeles County was the site of two attacks. There is one permit per 5,660 adults. San Mateo County was the scene of another attack. There is one permit for every 24,630 adults. Contrary to this, only one permit is required for every nine residents of the 43 right\u2013to-carry states.<\/p>\n<p>Americans can carry concealed handguns that are permitted by the government.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/2022\/10\/massive-errors-in-fbis-active-shooting-reports-regarding-cases-where-civilians-stop-attacks-instead-of-4-4-the-correct-number-is-at-least-34-4-in-2021-it-is-at-least-49-1-excluding-gun-free-zon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">About half of all active shooting incidents in the U.S. can be stopped<\/a><\/p>\n<p> Assessing the Current Approach <\/p>\n<p>Before doubling down on yet more gun control and making the rest of the country like California, let\u2019s first ask ourselves how the current approach has worked out. Even California Democrats are calling for a reevaluation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalifornia has some of the strictest gun control laws in the country, but look at what we just had today,\u201d Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/2023\/01\/los-angeles-county-sheriff-robert-luna-saying-that-californias-strict-gun-control-laws-arent-working\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Recognized<\/a>\u00a0After the Monterey Park attack. \u201cI can tell you this \u2014 the status quo is not working. We need to re-examine what we are doing, and what may work better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, most other Democrats are unwilling to concede that their laws aren\u2019t working. Biden was on Saturday\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoeBiden\/status\/1619448984753274880\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tweet<\/a>\u00a0He claims he has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/2022\/05\/biden-on-assault-weapons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Often<\/a>\u00a0made: \u201cIn the 10 years that the assault weapons ban was on the books, mass shootings went down.\u201d But there was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/crimeresearch.org\/2022\/05\/biden-on-assault-weapons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">no drop<\/a>\u00a0The number of attacks with so-called assault weapons between 1994 and 2004 was down. Importantly, the ban should have a significant impact on the number of assault weapons used in attacks during the federal ban period. This would then lead to a decrease in attacks using assault weapons in the post-ban period. However, the exact <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/01\/31\/fact-check-mass-shootings-actually-increased-during-federal-assault-weapons-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Contrary<\/a> It is true.
