Box-office record-breaker \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/top-gun-maverick\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Top Gun: Maverick<\/a>\u201d Six categories nominated, including best photo.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Even with this populist approach, many notable films were overlooked by Academy members. Many films, which are grounded in true stories, emphasize family relationships and themes that relate to faith. These themes seem to be ignored by Hollywood. A hAndful of taut, visually breathtaking popcorn flicks \u2014 notably \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/04\/20\/michael-bay-delivers-subtle-patriotism-amid-explosions-and-suspense-in-ambulance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ambulance<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/dnascience.plos.org\/2022\/06\/23\/jurassic-world-dominion-bashes-biotech\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jurassic World: Dominion<\/a>\u201d \u2014 were also passed over, even in technical categories like visual effects and editing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some critics may laugh at movies that target heartland audiences. But sometimes, they deserve a closer examination. Here are five riveting films released last year \u2014 nearly all currently streaming \u2014 that were snubbed for any Oscar nominations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \u2018Thirteen Lives\u2019 (PG-13, inspirational drama, Prime Video)\u00a0  <\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p>In the summer of 2018, world news became transfixed on 12 Thai boys and their soccer coach trapped in a cave system in northern Thailand \u2014 and how \u2018expert amateur\u2019 Divers moved heaven and Earth to save others. Similar to \u201cApollo 13,\u201d Ron Howard, the director, shares previously unknown details that enhance the human drama. \u201cThirteen Lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Howard spent significant resources to get the details right, bringing on real-life British diver Rick Stanton as a technical consultant for the film\u2019s cave sequences. He\u2019s portrayed by Viggo Mortensen in the movie. Stanton spoke out in an interview. <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/08\/05\/how-the-lead-diver-behind-the-thai-cave-rescue-made-thirteen-lives-realistic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reprinted<\/a> The moment he discovered the boys and their coach alive. \u201cWe felt relief, but it was very short-lived,\u201d He said. \u201cNow, what are we going to do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It became a race against two ticking clocks \u2014 their oxygen in the cave chamber getting thinner by the hour, and monsoon season on the horizon. The inspirational drama was captured with a wider lens than any documentary version. \u201cThirteen Lives\u201d This highlights the importance of over 5,000 people working together in 17 countries to save precious lives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> \u2018Jerry &#038; Marge Go Large\u2019 (PG-13, comedy Paramount Plus)  <\/p>\n<p>A smart, funny, and uplifting comedy. \u201cJerry &#038; Marge Go Large\u201d A true-story tale of a caper in small-town Evart (Michigan). Director David Frankel (\u201cThe Devil Wears Prada\u201dAnnette Bening (starring in ) joins a stellar cast.\u201cOpen Range\u201dRainn Wilson (\u201cThe Office\u201dBryan Cranston (\u201cBreaking Bad\u201d) as math genius Jerry Selbee.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Selbee notices an anomaly soon after he has retired from teaching advanced math for many decades. If enough tickets are purchased at the right times, a statistical flaw can tilt the odds in favor of players.
