This resulted in a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-01-17\/merck-mrk-ready-to-remove-cancer-linked-chemical-from-diabetes-drugs-in-2023?sref=y3YMCJ4e#xj4y7vzkg\"> month-long investigation<\/a> Merck. Januvia was not recalled in order to avoid drug shortages.<\/p>\n<p>Recalled products include commonly used drugs like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-updates-and-press-announcements-ndma-metformin\">Metformin<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/recalls-angiotensin-ii-receptor-blockers-arbs-including-valsartan-losartan-and-irbesartan\">losartan,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/fda-requests-removal-all-ranitidine-products-zantac-market\">Zantac<\/a>And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/safety\/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts\/lupin-pharmaceuticals-inc-issues-voluntary-nationwide-recall-four-lots-quinapril-tablets-due#:~:text=Baltimore%2C%20Maryland%2C%20December%2021%2C,Daily%20Intake%20(ADI)%20level.\">quinapril<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The following is an extract from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/publications\/dictionaries\/cancer-terms\/def\/nitrosamine\">National Cancer Institute<\/a>Some nitrosamines can cause a variety of health problems. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/t-cancer\">Cancer<\/a> In laboratory animals. British scientists John Barnes, Peter Magee, however, reported the discovery. <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/13342328\/\">Rodents were afflicted by liver tumors from nitrosamines<\/a> 1956. In pharmaceutical products, acceptable levels of nitrosamine range from 26.5\u201396 ng\/day, depending on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/141720\/download\">Chemical composition of the nitrosamine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One case of cancer per 100,000 is the acceptable level of potential carcinogens found in pharmaceuticals. The estimated risk for drug valsartan, for example, is between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7288647\/\">12\u201330 cases<\/a> per 100,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>Research has examined the susceptibility of nitrosamines to interactions with biological compounds. Special attention should be given to the whole lifecycle of a drug\u2014from manufacturing, storage, shipping, and metabolism\u2014to reduce the risk of introducing nitrosamines into the body.<\/p>\n<h2>What should we do to lower the risk of being exposed to nitrosamine?<\/h2>\n<p>FDA recommends the addition of antioxidant compounds to pharmaceutical products. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmaceuticalprocessingworld.com\/expert-answers-nitrosamine-impurity-questions\/\">Vitamin C and vitamin E<\/a> as nitrosamine-formation inhibitors. These compounds were found to be effective in inhibiting the formation of nitrosamines by over 80 percent according to one study.<\/p>\n<p>An alternative approach is to raise the pH of the environment where the pharmaceutical is manufactured. This reduces the possibility of creating nitrous acid which is necessary for the creation of nitrosamine.<\/p>\n<p>Individually, individuals can take responsibility and protect themselves against nitrosamine. Suggestion <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/news-insights\/news\/how-avoid-added-nitrates-and-nitrites-your-food\">Habits that people can adopt<\/a> Avoid cured meats and food additives. Choose organic products. Test your tap water for any nitrites or nitrates. Eat a diet high in vitamin C.<\/p>\n<p>At the moment, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/consumer-updates\/what-know-and-do-about-possible-nitrosamines-your-medication\">FDA advises<\/a> that individuals who are taking a medication that may have been recalled talk to their health care provider, as stopping medications without consulting one\u2019s physician can be dangerous. To find out if your medication has been recalled, patients should call their pharmacist. To find an alternative medication, patients should contact their physician and pharmacist.<\/p>\n<p>Drugs containing nitrosamine are still allowed to be sold despite concerns about contamination.
