You know Rhode Island is ready. We&#8217;re ready to protect our communities. We&#8217;re ready to end gun violence once and for all, and at least do everything we possibly can to make that statement a reality. So, I&#8217;m ready \u2013 as governor \u2013 I&#8217;m ready to sign this bill into law at the moment that it hits my desk.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Similar bills sponsored by Rep. Jason Knight, D.Barrington, as well as Sen. Josh Miller D-Cranston follow the state <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/rhode_island\/rhode-island-gun-reform-bills-now-law\/article_2323ec76-f19e-11ec-aa22-8f4120402f15.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In 2022, laws will be passed<\/a> This addressed large-capacity magazines and raised the legal age to purchase firearms and ammunition. It also prohibited public carrying of loaded shotguns or rifles.<\/p>\n<p>According to the new bills, assault weapons currently owned as of the effective date would be allowed to be taken into possession. \u201cgrandfathered\u201d However, the release states that they may be subject to registration provisions.<\/p>\n<p>If passed by General Assembly, Rhode Island would be the 10th state to ban the sale, manufacture and transfer assault weapons. California, Connecticut and Delaware would join Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland. New Jersey, New York and the District of Columbia in adopting such a ban.<\/p>\n<p>Greg A. Amore, Secretary of State, is a former teacher of high school history for almost three decades. \u201cwe have normalized what is not normal.\u201d He pointed out lockdowns, active-shooter drills, and training sessions as examples. This is because schools are fraught with fear. \u201csupposed to be a place of learning and joy.\u201d He claimed that it created an unfavorable environment for students and teachers. \u201ctext home because they\u2019re frightened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything we can do as public policymakers to mitigate that is something that is positive,\u201d Amore<\/p>\n<p>Knight said that Knight believes government&#8217;s top priority is \u201cto provide for the public\u201d safety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA big one that\u2019s a basic element of civilized society, we need to be able to sleep in our homes safely, we need to be able to go to work and school without fear of violence,\u201d Knight stated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New legislation in Rhode Island will focus on reducing gun violence.
