Sens. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markey.senate.gov\/news\/press-releases\/in-wake-of-holiday-travel-chaos-senators-markey-blumenthal-reps-cohen-garcia-khanna-reintroduce-legislation-to-ground-airlines-skyrocketing-fees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Get traction with two bills<\/a> These policies are designed to expedite passenger refunds in the event of flight disruptions, and to reduce airline fees. They cover everything from seat assignments to checked bags and brought-in baggage. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2017\/12\/14\/deltas-passenger-fee-bonanza-is-going-global-in-2018.html\">Billions<\/a> The airline industry.<\/p>\n<p>Sens. co-sponsored the Airline Passenger&#8217;s Bill of Rights. Senators Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I. and Bob Casey, D-Pa. Ron Wyden, D-Ore. and Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. also co-sponsored The Airline Passengers&#8217; Bill of Rights. This bill provides minimum compensation for those who have been bumped from flights. According to the Transportation Department, airlines are allowed to pay $1,550 for delays.<\/p>\n<p>The legislation is not approved by them until a month later. <span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\" id=\"RegularArticle-QuoteInBody-5\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/LUV\/\">Southwest Airlines<\/a><span class=\"QuoteInBody-inlineButton\"><span class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistContainer\" id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\" data-analytics-id=\"-WatchlistDropdown\"><button class=\"AddToWatchlistButton-watchlistButton\"><span class=\"QuoteInBody-quoteNameContainer\" data-test=\"QuoteInBody\"><\/span><\/button><\/span><\/span><\/span> canceled some 16,700 flights from Dec. 21 through Dec. 31 after its internal crew rebooking systems were unable to handle numerous flight changes from bad weather, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/01\/25\/southwest-airlines-tries-to-improve-its-system-after-holiday-meltdown.html\">prompting executives<\/a> to slash the schedule. Southwest last week said it has processed nearly all reimbursement requests but declined to provide further detail.<\/p>\n<p>Sen.
