Gwen Moore (D.WI) and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/house-democrats\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">House Democrats<\/a> We strongly opposed the renaming a subcommittee, as the new name contained the term. \u201cwelfare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During a procedural <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sfOse-LbCE8&#038;t=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meeting<\/a> Tuesday&#8217;s House Ways and Means Committee, several Democratic members questioned why the \u201cSubcommittee on Worker and Family Support\u201d The would be renamed \u201cSubcommittee on Work and Welfare.\u201d Republican leaders noted that the subcommittee&#8217;s name has been changed five times over the past 30 years. They said this was a sign of the urgent need to address labor shortages and encourage workforce participation. But, Democrats accuse them of having racist motives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI find it amazing that this committee would deliberately add a pejorative to the names of the subcommittees,\u201d Moore made this observation. \u201cIt is not true that denying people benefits would enable them to escape poverty \u2013 no. The American Rescue Plan is what kept people who were poor from falling into deep, deep poverty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason Smith, R-MO, chair of Ways and Means Committee, responded that \u201cthe focus that we are going to have is to try to uplift people out of poverty\u201d And contended that \u201cthe best way to uplift people out of poverty is with work.\u201d Rep. Mike Thompson (D\u2013CA) asked Smith if he was trying to. \u201cshame people\u201d Smith said that he was unable to take the concern seriously due to the rhetorical manipulations of Democrats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is clearly about the words and definitions,\u201d He concluded. \u201cYour party is one that we don\u2019t know if you can say man or woman, birthing person or mother. It\u2019s clearly about work and welfare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrats have caused controversy with their use of the term \u201cbirthing people\u201d in official capacities, including the initial budget proposal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/biden-budget-proposal-refers-to-mothers-as-birthing-people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Offered<\/a> By President Joe Biden. The change was made to help transgender people. \u201cnonbinary,\u201d However, opponents argue that the expression is demeaning for women.<\/p>\n<p>Moore was echoed by Danny Davis (D\u2013IL), who agreed that the name change had racial implications. \u201cAs an African American and ranking member of this subcommittee, what was \u2018Family Support,\u2019 I want to record my strong opposition to the change of the title \u2018Work and Welfare.\u2019 It is my hope that this title was not intended to be racially offensive, but in reality it really is,\u201d He said so. \u201cThe term \u2018welfare\u2019 is a deeply pejorative term in our country that many people use to describe individuals who want to game the system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Darin L. LaHood (R. IL) called the conversation \u201csilly\u201d He stated that the committee needed to address more urgent issues. \u201cIt seems to me a bit of a fabricated controversy,\u201d He made a comment. \u201cI hope we can get beyond this and get to the work that needs to get done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moore insisted strongly that Smith&#8217;s name change was evil and accused Smith with prejudice. \u201cRonald Reagan really used it exclusively to describe the \u2018welfare queen\u2019 who had numerous names, Social Security numbers, different husbands, different welfare checks,\u201d She spoke. \u201cYou know doggone well that it has not changed to be the dog whistle that it was there. It\u2019s a foghorn at this point. And you know, Mr. Chairman, that the intent of this change, however many times it is changed, is to cast aspersions on the people who are served.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moore said that Moore should wear hers. \u201cwelfare queen tiara\u201d To future meetings. \u201cWe know what the intent of the use of this word is,\u201d She continued. \u201cYou\u2019re telling us right now that the whole focus of this subcommittee is going to be demonizing particularly women who have children, and I don\u2019t appreciate it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith and other committee members pointed out that the need to address welfare reform has increased in the wake of labor shortages.
