He claimed that he had slipped up in his previously consistent claim that his wife or son were not murdered.<\/p>\n<p>Creighton Waters, the lead prosecutor, was questioning Jeff Croft (a senior special agent with South Carolina Law Enforcement Division) when he inquired about Murdaugh&#8217;s interview. \u201ctraumatic\u201d picture the defendant was shown of his family\u2019s injuries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you asked the defendant about a traumatic picture that he saw of Paul and Maggie, what did he say?\u201d Waters asked Croft.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just so bad. I did him so bad,\u201d Croft responded, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzfeednews.com\/article\/davidmack\/alex-murdaugh-trial-did-him-so-bad-paul-maggie\">Buzzfeed News<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2019I did him so bad\u2019?\u201d Waters follow up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, sir,\u201d Croft replied.<\/p>\n<p>During the exchange Murdaugh seemed to shake his head and speak the words. \u201cthat\u2019s not what I said.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The interview was played back, but it&#8217;s unclear if Murdaugh spoke. \u201cI did him so bad\u201d Or \u201cthey did him so bad.\u201d Cathy Russon (executive producer at Law &#038; Crime) noted that it was \u201chard to tell\u201d What Murdaugh said to investigators. Chief investigative reporter of the Post and Courier, Avery Wilks, stated that he had heard Murdaugh. \u201cthey did\u201d Not \u201cI did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">My two cents, it\u2019s hard to tell if he says \u201cI\u201d He was so evil or \u201cthey\u201d He was so evil! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/AlexMurdaugh?src=hash&#038;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#AlexMurdaugh<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Cathy Russon (@cathyrusson) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cathyrusson\/status\/1620178429122592783?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 30, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Murdaugh\u2019s defense attorneys are expected to cross-examine Croft on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Opening statements began last Thursday, with Murdaugh accused of murdering his wife, Maggie, and youngest son, Paul, to build sympathy for himself as his embezzlement of millions of dollars from his law firm and clients was about to be revealed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cListen to that gathering storm that all came to a head,\u201d Waters said in his opening statements,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/25\/us\/alex-murdaugh-murder-trial.html\">according to The New York Times<\/a>. \u201cThe evidence is going to be such that you are going to reach the inescapable conclusion that Alex murdered Maggie and Paul, that he was the storm, that the storm was coming for them, and the storm arrived on June 7, 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Waters said that Murdaugh texted and called his dead wife\u2019s phone after allegedly committing the murders to create an alibi, but that evidence shows Murdaugh was at the dog kennels on his family\u2019s estate when the murders occurred. The prosecutor pointed to bullet casings matching those found around Maggie\u2019s body in other places on the property, which Waters suggested meant she was killed with \u201ca family weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that Murdaugh didn\u2019t have an explanation for where two of the three rifles he had purchased over the past couple of years had gone. Waters also mentioned that empty boxes of ammunition with the same brand and type of bullets as those in the bodies were found on the property.<\/p>\n<p>Even more damning was a raincoat with gunshot residue found at Murdaugh\u2019s mother\u2019s home, where he went after his wife and son were murdered.<\/p>\n<p>Waters also pointed to cell phone evidence taken from Paul\u2019s phone less than five minutes before he was killed. Paul had filmed one of the dogs to send to a friend, and prosecutors allege Murdaugh\u2019s voice can be heard in the background of the recording. Murdaugh has said he wasn\u2019t at the kennels that night. Prosecutors allege that Murdaugh murdered his wife and son around 8:49 p.m., just a few minutes after the video was taken.<\/p>\n<p>In the defense\u2019s opening statements, Murdaugh\u2019s attorney Dick Harpootlian argued that the brutal nature of the murders was one reason Murdaugh couldn\u2019t be the killer since he was described as a loving father and husband.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe didn\u2019t kill \u2014 butcher \u2014 his son and his wife,\u201d Harpootlian said in his opening statement. \u201cAnd you need to put from your mind any suggestion that he did.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The defense also argued that the prosecution\u2019s timeline was wrong and that Maggie and Paul were killed at some point after Murdaugh had left to visit his mother, People Magazine\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/crime\/alex-murdaugh-trial-prosecutors-discuss-son-cell-phone-video\/\">reported<\/a>.
