By filling the sky in sun-reflective sulfur the company was able to achieve its goal. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.technologyreview.com\/2022\/12\/24\/1066041\/a-startup-says-its-begun-releasing-particles-into-the-atmosphere-in-an-effort-to-tweak-the-climate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hoffnungen<\/a> to attack climate change directly by simply reducing the world\u2019s temperature \u2014 and it\u2019s hoping to make a fortune in the process by selling carbon credits to greenhouse gas emitters. <\/p>\n<p>However, blocking the sun from reaching our skin would have catastrophic consequences. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newfoodmagazine.com\/news\/72879\/block-sun-crop-yields\/#:~:text=They%20identified%20that%20improvements%20in,blocking%20sunlight%20can%20affect%20growth.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Food<\/a> Energy production and even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7400257\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Human<\/a> Health, these credits would need to include both the \u201ccost\u201d for each ton carbon dioxide, offset by the sulfur. Once accounting for the damage from blocking our sun, it\u2019s likely Make Sunrise\u2019s credits are worth less than zero and are a net liability for humanity that could, if scaled, cause significant damage to our planet.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To prevent financial frauds and ecological catastrophe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/acidrain\/what-acid-rain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Acid rain<\/a>, the Biden administration must take immediate action to shut the company\u2019s operations down for good.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, however, Make Sunset\u2019s business model has an unexpected silver lining. By so destructively following the logic of ESG (environmental, social, and governance) investing to its conclusion \u2014 cutting carbon dioxide at any economic or environmental cost while massively undercutting the cost of every competitor and reaping arbitrary carbon credits \u2014 Make Sunsets could herald the end of the ESG capital dumps. Maybe investors will realize that investing in useless projects is not the best way to increase global supply-demand. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/capabilities\/strategy-and-corporate-finance\/our-insights\/2023-a-testing-year-will-the-macro-scenario-range-widen-or-narrow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">imbalances<\/a> Grow is a bad idea.<\/p>\n<p>Established in October 2022 <em>After<\/em> Make Sunsets was the first to launch sulfur. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2023\/01\/09\/make-sunsets-solar-geoengineering-climate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brainchild<\/a> Luke Iseman is a former director for hardware at the famed technology accelerator Y Combinator. After reading the science fiction novel \u201cTermination Shock,\u201d Iseman is a billionaire who shoots sulfur in the sky. He realized that cooling the planet could help him make a profit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2023\/01\/09\/make-sunsets-solar-geoengineering-climate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Interview<\/a> Iseman spoke to The Washington Post about why he decided to continue with the project. \u201cEvery day that we don\u2019t inject sulfur dioxide into the stratosphere as responsibly as the state of the science will let us and as much as we can economically, species are needlessly going extinct and people are dying.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> Market for Carbon Credits to be Destroyed <\/p>\n<p>Sulfur dioxide costs very little. Iseman could sell carbon offset credits at $10 per ton. State-certified credits range in price from $25 to $35 per tonne. <a href=\"https:\/\/ww2.arb.ca.gov\/our-work\/programs\/cap-and-trade-program\/program-data\/cap-and-trade-program-data-dashboard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">California\u2019s<\/a> Program to $65-$95 for the <a href=\"https:\/\/tradingeconomics.com\/commodity\/carbon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">European Union\u2019s<\/a> program. The market value for carbon credits is calculated by estimating the carbon dioxide emissions and comparing them to the actual world damage.
