Durham claimed that he once extended his investigation to include an investigation into \u201csuspicious financial dealings\u201d Trump-related, but the report said the details were largely unclear and that Durham was not facing charges.<\/p>\n<p>Some people were skeptical about the story. The Federalist\u2019s Margot Cleveland <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/01\/30\/6-reasons-the-nyts-hit-job-on-john-durhams-imminent-report-instantly-unravels\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Six reasons were outlined<\/a> Why she believes that the New York Times is right \u201claunched a preemptive assault\u201d in anticipation of Durham\u2019s special counsel report. Chuck Ross, investigative reporter at The Washington Free Beacon. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChuckRossDC\/status\/1620139596880424960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Surmised the \u201cflimsy\u201d<\/a> New York Times article will enable Democrats to give Attorney General Merrick Grland an opportunity \u201cexcuse to block Durham\u2019s report, or frame it negatively for the media if it\u2019s released.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Durham has so far secured one guilty plea. That of Kevin Clinesmith, an ex-FBI lawyer, who was accused falsifying a document to renew FISA surveillance powers on Carter Page, Trump&#8217;s former foreign policy adviser. Clinesmith was not sentenced and will be facing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/fbi-lawyer-clinesmith-one-year-bar-suspension-guilty-plea-fisa-deception\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one-year bar suspension<\/a>.
