These statistics are however motivating factors and January was recognized as such. \u201cHuman Trafficking Awareness Month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And while awareness is appreciated, it\u2019s only the first step on the road to reform for a problem whose solution is hiding in plain sight.<\/p>\n<p>It is simple and deceptively easy to stop sex trafficking. No buyers, no business. We can reduce the number of victims being sex peddlers by creating strong deterrents.<\/p>\n<p>Nevada has legal brothels that have been operating in some counties for 48+ years. However, they were allowed to continue for well over 100 years. Thus, instead of creating strong deterrents, the state does precisely the opposite: it encourages sex buyers, and thus sex trafficking \u2014 a form of slavery prohibited under the 13th Amendment of the United States Constitution \u2014 through legalized prostitution in rural locales.<\/p>\n<p>Nevada&#8217;s government acts as the trafficker. It makes millions of dollars from taxes and licensing fees. <a href=\"https:\/\/endsexualexploitation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/PR_Quick-Facts-on-Nevada-Prostitution-Harms_10-06-20_Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prostitution tourism state<\/a> When girls or women are sold, it is paid. Other traffickers claim that Nevada&#8217;s laws make it easy to recruit because they already do half the work.<\/p>\n<p>Women such as three survivors of Nevada\u2019s legal prostitution marketplace, who with the help of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE) Law Center, are now <a href=\"https:\/\/endsexualexploitation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/Williams-v.-Sisolak_First-Amended-Complaint_11.10.2021.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Suing<\/a> the state to bring this abuse profiteering to an end, citing the 13th\u00a0Amendment\u2019s absolute prohibition on all forms of slavery, and on governments enabling it.<\/p>\n<p>Nevada treats women as human sexual chattel, with young women especially in demand. As in all other markets, supply and need drive the prices. Those who make more from their bodies may charge higher prices. As one <a href=\"https:\/\/endsexualexploitation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/FINAL_Nevada_March2018-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Study<\/a> Creighton University has noted that \u201cphrases like \u2018fresh meat,\u2019 \u2018brand new,\u2019 and \u2018daddy\u2019s little girl\u2019 are all used to connote the youth of those being sold for sex \u2026 The higher profit margins create incentives for traffickers to recruit younger individuals.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, it&#8217;s not surprising that Nevada is among the top 10 states for young people ages 20 and younger (including possibly underage). <a href=\"https:\/\/endsexualexploitation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/FINAL_Nevada_March2018-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">engaged<\/a> In the sex industry. In her <a href=\"https:\/\/prostitutionresearch.com\/prostitution-and-trafficking-in-nevada-making-the-connections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Book<\/a>, \u201cProstitution and Trafficking in Nevada, Making the Connections,\u201d Melissa Farley refers to a survey of 45 women who were prostitution in Nevada legal brothels. 23% of them reported that they were child prostitutes. This survey also found that 57% gave their entire income to their trafficker or pimp.<\/p>\n<p>A world in which other women are available for sale is not safe for women. Nevada&#8217;s women who are not prostitution victims also face violence from men. Nevada is consistently ranked <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.speakcdn.com\/assets\/2497\/nevada_2019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">First<\/a> In the country in domestic violence fatalities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/232563\/forcible-rape-rate-in-the-us-by-state\/\">Seventh<\/a> As of 2020, the following applies to rape\/sexual assault: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nevadacurrent.com\/blog\/nevada-has-nations-4th-highest-rate-for-intimate-murder-of-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fourth<\/a> For women killed by men, it is only the 32nd most populous country in the country.<\/p>\n<p>And to refute the oft-used argument that legalized prostitution in certain areas reduces its presence elsewhere \u2014 at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stop.or.kr\/atchfile\/downloadAtchfile.do?vchkcode=e57a2fa6a78e1d93b2608d481087fb1b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">90%<\/a>\u00a0Prostitution in Nevada occurs outside the legal brothel system. Although prostitution is illegal in Las Vegas, Reno and elsewhere in Nevada, it is common in legal strip clubs or legal escort agencies. Per-capita <a href=\"https:\/\/endsexualexploitation.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/FINAL_Nevada_March2018-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rates<\/a> for commercial sex, both legal and illegal, are 63% higher in Nevada than the next highest state \u2014 New York.<\/p>\n<p>Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford <a href=\"https:\/\/news3lv.com\/news\/local\/reno-man-sentenced-to-prison-for-attempt-sex-trafficking-and-child-abuse-neglect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said,<\/a> \u201cJanuary is human trafficking month and there\u2019s no better time to remind Nevadans victimized by human trafficking that my office is here to help.\u201d We appreciate his commitment. However, so long as there is legal brothel in Nevada, all efforts to combat human trafficking are futile.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This one decision could end human trafficking in Silver State and free hundreds of girls and women from its ravages. It would also restore dignity to the human race.
