Nevada<\/em><\/a>, 1867) \u2014 and, with almost all roads owned by the government, this could become a problem.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The ongoing campaign against terrorism is now in full swing. \u201cBig Truck\u201d \u2014 or, as we call them in Texas, simply \u201cmy truck\u201d \u2014 is bound to lead to additional restrictions to \u201csave the planet\u201d And \u201csave the children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The latest push against large pickup trucks takes two basic forms: They\u2019re large and scary and hurt people, and they\u2019re bad for the environment, especially with people not really needing them for anything practical.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">SUVs and pickup trucks are three times more likely to injure or kill people in a collision than smaller cars.<\/p>\n<p>NYC must adopt a weight-based tax in order to discourage the use of large and dangerous cars on our streets.<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/IXWLSddDFN\">https:\/\/t.co\/IXWLSddDFN<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/N2MpuDCjbs\">pic.twitter.com\/N2MpuDCjbs<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Transportation Alternatives (@TransAlt) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TransAlt\/status\/1588177991762432004?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 3, 2022<\/a>  <\/p>\n<p>The large and dangerous argument goes like this: Americans only drive big trucks because Americans are vain, and big pickup trucks have become a status symbol, with mostly suburban owners citing their truck\u2019s \u201cruggedness\u201d and \u201cpower.\u201d As further proof, detractors claim <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/ford-pickup-trucks-history\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">most<\/a> of these large rides don\u2019t even have a trailer hitch.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Of course, one thing many Americans don\u2019t much take a liking to is other people telling them what they must do with their purchases and lifestyle. I don\u2019t own a large pickup truck \u2014 yet \u2014 but if these pearl-clutching busybodies don\u2019t mind their business, I\u2019m sorely tempted to go out and buy one.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> Child vs. Adult Deaths <\/p>\n<p>As a result, after making some comments on Twitter and having an <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DHarwitt\/status\/1617626486898577409?s=20&#038;t=iCO1RZtqiOkOP9uMGixutw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ivy League liberal<\/a> claim that large pickups are \u201cbehind the uptick in pedestrian deaths, especially little kids, and are obviously worse for the environment (both air quality affecting our health now and global warming affecting life more broadly)\u2026so it hurts a lot of other people for no practical gain,\u201d I decided to look into a key contention \u2014 that more \u201clittle kids\u201d have been getting killed by big pickup trucks.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I opened the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention database on the unintentional deaths of pedestrians by motor vehicles via its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/injury\/wisqars\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WISQARS\u2122 (Web-based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting System)<\/a> database and ran two series. One was pedestrian deaths, ages 0-14 from 2000 to 2020, and the other was pedestrian deaths from ages 18 to 85+ over the same period.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What followed is very interesting. Contrary to the claims of some, pedestrian deaths among \u201clittle kids\u201d have been steadily dropping since 2000. This might be due to a few factors. First, the use of alcohol while driving has been dropping.
