It was an embarrassing end of a short tenure marked by poor cooperation between the two countries and record levels of cocaine, heroin, and fentanyl crossing the border. These included complaints about Palmeri&#8217;s handling of poor care. <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COVID-19<\/a> Two agents who were sick from drug-fighting had to be evacuated from Mexico due to their precautions. Further, Palmeri was adamant that drug-fighting funds were used for improper purposes. According to records, he also attempted to repay himself for expenses incurred for paying for a birthday celebration. <\/p>\n<p>Palmeri was succeeded by Paul Knierim, until November 2021 when Todd Zimmerman assumed the position. A person familiar with the investigation said that this was the case. <i>Washington Examiner<\/i>. <\/p>\n<p>The DEA did not provide any information on Palmeri&#8217;s dismissal or his decision to retire. The Washington Examiner was informed by a source familiar in the investigation that Palmeri remained with DEA after he was fired from his position in spring 2021.
