I talk to senators on both sides of the aisle on a regular basis, and same on the House. And we try to do briefings to them on a bipartisan basis, so we send everything to both sides. We try to do everything in a way that promotes confidence in the system and that allows for that.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Sen. <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/marco-rubio\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marco Rubio<\/a> (R-FL), Vice Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee stated that Haines had given the senators a gift. \u201cvery unsatisfying hearing\u201d Wednesday. \u201cThe bottom line is this: They won\u2019t tell us what they have until the special counsel allows them to tell us. That\u2019s an unacceptable position,&#8221; Rubio said. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Until the administration stops stonewalling Congress, there will be pain as a consequence,&#8221; Cotton said. \u201cThere\u2019s a simple solution to this. This is the time for the administration to stop obstructing Congress and give us these documents. <\/p>\n<p>Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA), who was the chairman of this committee, also criticised the process. \u201cnot a tenable position\u201d Haines took the picture. \u201cWhat I think the director heard is \u2014 she didn\u2019t just hear it from Sen. Rubio and I. Literally every member of the committee, without exception, said this won\u2019t stand,&#8221; Warner said. <\/p>\n<p>Warner said, \u201cEvery member of the committee, regardless of Democrat or Republican, unanimous in that this position that we are left in, until somehow a special counsel designates that it&#8217;s OK for us to get briefed, is not going to stand.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Merrick Garland, Attorney-General, selects former Trump appointee <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/robert-hur-garland-appointed-biden-classified-docs-special-counsel\">Robert Hur, U.S. attorney, has been appointed as special counsel by Robert Hur on January 12.<\/a> to investigate Biden\u2019s possible mishandling of classified documents. Garland was also appointed ex-prosecutor for war crimes in Kosovo <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/trump-special-counsel-jack-smith-involved-lois-lerner-irs-scandal\">Jack Smith will handle all investigations that are centered around Jack Smith<\/a> Trump and Mar-a-Lago late last year. <\/p>\n<p>Haines stated Thursday that she tries to stress the importance of this statement. \u201cwhat we\u2019re doing is for the nation and not for politics.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd a piece of it, from my perspective, is \u2026 trying to expose as much as we can about what we do and what we don\u2019t do and being as transparent about that as possible so that again, we can engender trust with the American people about how we do our business because I think there are a lot of misconceptions about the intelligence community that we\u2019re constantly trying to pierce,\u201d Haines said. <\/p>\n<p>The DNI was added: \u201cThe perception of the intelligence community as being politicized makes it harder for us to do our job, right? \u2026 If the public doesn\u2019t trust us and believes that we are biased politically or otherwise frankly in a way that is illegitimate, then people won\u2019t pay attention to the warnings that we have \u2014 it makes us less effective from a national security perspective.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The DOJ <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/odni\">Office of the Director of National Intelligence<\/a> So far <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/intel-community-silent-biden-damage-assessment\">haven\u2019t weighed in publicly on the existence of any damage assessment<\/a> on Biden\u2019s classified documents saga despite both agencies repeatedly discussing the Mar-a-Lago risk review last year. <\/p>\n<p>Thursday&#8217;s Haines speech <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/transforming-classification.blogs.archives.gov\/2023\/01\/13\/pidb-co-sponsors-conference-on-americas-secrets-classified-information-and-our-democracy-january-26-27-at-the-lbj-library-in-austin-texas-to-attend-in-person\/\">Sponsored<\/a> Public Interest Declassification Board that encourages intelligence community members to declassify intelligence more. <\/p>\n<p>Haines acknowledged that overclassification was a problem in her Thursday speech. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an urgent challenge to solve because first, overclassification undermines critical democratic objectives such as increasing transparency to promote an informed citizenry and greater accountability,\u201d Haines said. \u201cAnd second, overclassification undermines the basic trust that the public has in its government. And third, overclassification negatively impacts national security because it increases the challenges associated with sharing information that should not be classified or at least not classified at the level the information is classified at.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><b><a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/\">CLICK HERE FOR MORE INFORMATION FROM THE WASHINGTON XAMINER<\/a><\/b> <\/p>\n<p>Haines referred to investigations regarding overclassification, and the fact \u201cthere are virtually no incentives in our bureaucracy to declassify or to refrain from classifying a document, but there are plenty of incentives to classify.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s personal attorneys <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/bob-bauer-point-man-biden-classified-docs-saga\">They first found classified documents in November, they said.<\/a> The <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/mccaul-demands-answers-blinken-classified-docs-penn-biden-center\">Penn Biden Center<\/a>.
