Mitt, Utah) was elected RNC chairwoman in 2017. Former president Donald Trump endorsed her, but she was criticised for the Republicans&#8217; loss in 2020 and the unexpectedly poor showing at the last year&#8217;s midterms. Dhillon, a former vice-chairwoman of the California Republican Party, was a legal advisor on Trump&#8217;s 2020 campaign. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/politics\/story\/2023-01-25\/california-republican-gop-ronna-romney-mcdaniel-harmeet-dhillon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> The GOP has to be there &#8220;a lot of changes,&#8221; McDaniel is being criticized &#8220;losing elections.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The RNC is responsible for the party&#8217;s fundraising and nomination process. It conducts its leadership race via secret ballot.<\/p>\n<p>Trump and Ron DeSantis, a possible primary rival, were matched against each other in this race. DeSantis was in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/desantis-calls-new-blood-lead-rnc-ahead-party-chair-vote-swipe-mcdaniel-we-need-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">interview<\/a> Dhillon was praised one day prior to the vote and the Republican Party needed it &#8220;a change.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Reince Priebus, former chairman of the RNC\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/politics-republican-national-convention-united-states-government-2022-midterm-elections-donald-trump-ab2a2c94ff0f110e3c45c37cdf695695\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> The Associated Press before McDaniel&#8217;s vote &#8220;in very good shape to get reelected.&#8221; Tim Miller, a former RNC adviser, said that Dhillon had told him. &#8220;more of a shot than what the public expectations&#8221; were. McDaniel had &#8220;a huge advantage,&#8221; Miller said, Dhillon &#8220;tapped into legitimate frustration with the RNC.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>McDaniel received a private endorsement from Trump.
