They face multiple charges in connection to the death of a man, aged 29, who died in hospital after an altercation with authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Tyre Nichols, who was pulled over by Memphis police in a traffic stop on January 10, died. Local media reported that he had been taken to the hospital three days earlier. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnews5.com\/2023\/01\/26\/5-former-officers-custody-connection-death-tyre-nichols\/\">reported<\/a>. Nichols and the five other former officers are all black.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities stopped Nichols January 7 \u201creckless driving\u201d Near Raines Road, Ross Road in Memphis. One count each of official oppression and second-degree murder, aggravated attack-act in concert and two counts each of aggravated kidnapping.<\/p>\n<p>Local media reported Haley and Martin were placed in jail on $350,000 bonds, while Smith and Mills were charged with a $250,000 bond. Bean was booked on a $250,000 bond.<\/p>\n<p>Martin was represented by Bill Massey by Attorney Massey. He told local media that he was indicted.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BREAKING: A grand jury indicted five former officers of the Memphis Police Department on charges including second-degree murder and aggravated assault. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mkPLf4CCHU\">pic.twitter.com\/mkPLf4CCHU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ben Crump (@AttorneyCrump) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AttorneyCrump\/status\/1618682947980369923?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 26, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cerelyn Davis, chief of Memphis Police, issued Wednesday night a statement about the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn light of the horrific circumstances surrounding the death of Tyre Nichols, it is absolutely incumbent upon me, your chief, to address the status of what the Memphis Police Department is doing, has done, and will continue to do in furtherance of finding truth in this tragic loss, ensuring we communicate with honesty and transparency, and that there is absolute accountability for those responsible for Tyre\u2019s death,\u201d Davis said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is not just a professional failing,\u201d According to Fox News, Davis said. \u201cThis is a failing of basic humanity toward another individual,\u201d adding the five officers involved in Nichols\u2019 death, \u201cfailed our community, and they failed the Nichols family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davis continues <a href=\"https:\/\/wreg.com\/news\/local\/tyre-nichols\/memphis-police-chief-releases-statement-as-tyre-nichols-investigation-continues\/\">noted<\/a> Nichols\u2019 death as \u201cheinous, reckless, and inhumane,\u201d saying the video footage of Nichols\u2019 confrontation with authorities would be released in the coming days \u201cin the vein of transparency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI expect you to feel what the Nichols family feels,\u201d Davis said. \u201cI expect you to feel outraged by the disregard for basic human rights as our police officers have taken an oath to do the opposite of what transpired on the video.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Davis asked that the public refrain from reacting violently to the release of the footage.<\/p>\n<p>Nichols family members viewed footage from the body cam of police officers on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing Nichols\u2019 family members, called the video \u201cappalling, heinous, violent, and troublesome\u201d in a press conference, adding that Nichols\u2019 mother could not sit through more than a minute of the video.<\/p>\n<p>Memphis residents told The Daily Wire about concerns surrounding protests and riots from groups like Black Lives Matter and antifa activists in the aftermath of the video of Nichols\u2019 confrontation with authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Residents claim that crime in Memphis has increased since Steven Mulory, Shelby County District attorney, was confirmed by George Soros-backed District Attorney, has been reduced.<\/p>\n<p>The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation stated to The Daily Wire that Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has received reports from authorities. \u201cno insight\u201d Reports of protests and riots being formed<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Five former Memphis Police Department officers are in custody and face several charges after their involvement in the death of a 29-year-old male, who died earlier this month in a hospital days after a confrontation with authorities.
