Currently, an Ad Hoc committee is working on details \u2013 including member states, jurisdiction, and focus areas \u2013 for the convention, which will be formalized in September 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Although the UN Conventions currently address information and communication technologies in a broad sense, the pending UN convention will be the first one to specifically address these communications methods within the context of \u201ccriminal purposes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What is it exactly? \u201ccriminal purposes,\u201d However, this definition is still vague and does not include people who spread the word. \u201cmisinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The best <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unodc.org\/unodc\/en\/cybercrime\/ad_hoc_committee\/ahc_fourth_session\/main.html\">recent<\/a> draft of the convention\u2019s objectives and scope explains how the UN is working with countries to \u201cpromote, facilitate and strengthen international cooperation in preventing and combating the use of information and communications technologies for criminal purposes,\u201d This includes compelled countries to adopt. \u201clegislative and other measures as are necessary to establish\u201d Certain online actions are considered unacceptable \u201coffence under domestic law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Simply put, the UN could force governments to adopt policies that define what constitutes sovereignty. \u201ccriminal\u201d Information shared by citizens<\/p>\n<p>Article 26, for example, of the draft document calls on countries to adopte \u201dlegislative and other measures\u201c\u00a0to criminalize individuals who engage in sharing content that promotes \u201csubversive or armed activities directed towards the violent overthrow of the regime of another State.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Article 27 is similarly vague.
