Surprise! Surprise!<\/p>\n<p>Toymaker MGA Entertainment currently participates in intellectual property <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/lawsuit\">dispute<\/a> T.I. T.I. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/topic\/music\">pop group<\/a> OMG Girlz. OMG Girlz was sued by Clifford T.I. Harris and Tameka, Xscape singer \u201cTiny\u201d Harris, mother to Zonnique Pullins, an ex-member of OMG Girlz, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/ip-law\/omg-dolls-t-i-dispute-gets-mistrial-over-cultural-appropriation\">per<\/a> Bloomberg Law\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit sought a declaratory judgment that OMG Dolls didn\u2019t infringe on the intellectual property rights of the former band. MGA was sent a cease and desist notice requesting they stop selling these toys.<\/p>\n<p>From 2009 to 2015, the OMG Girlz performed. They countered by claiming that the toys company had stolen their names and likenesses, plus they sought damages. They claimed the dolls were copied from OMG Girlz. \u201cintentionally designed to trade on the OMG Girlz\u2019 likeness and brand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The OMG Girlz also claimed cultural appropriation. They said that MGA Entertainment&#8217;s CEO Isaac Larian was using the dolls. \u201cto misappropriate the likeness of black female artists.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Central District of California Judge James V. Selna barred testimony regarding the alleged racism in cultural appropriation.<\/p>\n<p>The trial began on January 17th and was abruptly stopped this week by the introduction prohibited statements mentioning cultural theft. The jury heard testimony from a woman. \u201cdid not want to support a company that steals from African Americans and their ideas.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to court documents, Judge Selna agreed that the woman\u2019s testimony regarding cultural appropriation was considered a \u201crant\u201d MGA Entertainment, and it was prejudicial.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>T.I.\u2019s lawyer, Erin Ranahan, tried to get Judge Selna to reconsider, claiming the testimony didn\u2019t help their case. The judge ultimately declared a mistrial.<\/p>\n<p>Pullins previously posted photos of OMG Girlz next images of OMG Dolls and invited her Instagram followers for feedback on how they felt about the similarities. Many of them agreed that dolls look similar.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo things will not be disputed: Isaac Larian and MGA have sold a lot of OMG dolls,\u201d Attorney David Scheper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lamag.com\/citythinkblog\/rapper-t-i-and-wife-tinys-omg-dolls-trial-sees-first-testimony\/\">said<\/a> During his opening statements. \u201cAnd the OMG Girlz and their family have never asked for permission, never given permission and never made a penny from all those sales.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis case is about greed. That\u2019s what it\u2019s about.
