Former Governor Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) first implemented the mandate. Andrew Cuomo (D.NY) first implemented the mandate in 2021. Hochul then supported the edict after she was elected governor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur healthcare systems are in desperate need of staff right now, we\u2019ve had ambulances waiting five hours at our local emergency rooms to unload patients,\u201d Rochester-based reporter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WHEC_JLewke\/status\/1617630135431368710?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jennifer Lewke<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whec.com\/top-news\/hochul-is-speaking-in-rochester-at-145-p-m-about-housing-and-lead-exposure-proposals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Hochul. \u201cThe hospitals and nursing homes say they\u2019re waiting for DOH [New York State Department of Health] guidance on whether they can hire any of those workers back. What\u2019s the latest on that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hochul said she\u2019s considering legal options to challenge the decision that overturned the mandate and highlighted recruitment efforts for more vaccinated healthcare workers.<\/p>\n<p>The Democrat also admitted that the shortage is \u201ca problem,\u201d While claiming that the answer is no, it is to not hire unvaccinated workers.\u00a0\u201cI don\u2019t think the answer is to have someone who comes in who is sick, be exposed to someone who can give them coronavirus, give them COVID-19,\u201d Lewke was informed by the governor. \u201cI don\u2019t know that that\u2019s the right answer. In fact, I\u2019m pretty sure it\u2019s not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think everybody who goes into a healthcare facility or nursing home should have the assurance, and their family members should know, that we have taken all steps to protect the public health and that includes making sure that those who come in contact with them at their time of most vulnerability, when they are sick or elderly, will not pass on the virus,\u201d Hochul was added.<\/p>\n<p>Lewke pressed the governor again. \u201cCouldn\u2019t there be other safety precautions, masking? Or other mechanisms in order to allow some of them back in?
