This may lead to users experiencing a new type of depression. \u201cemotional blunting,\u201d According to a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41386-022-01523-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> in Neuropsychopharmacology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEmotional blunting is a common side effect of SSRI antidepressants,\u201d Professor Barbara Sahakian of University of Cambridge was the lead author. \u201cIn a way, this may be in part how they work \u2014 they take away some of the emotional pain that people who experience depression feel, but, unfortunately, it seems that they also take away some of the enjoyment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom our study, we can now see that this is because they become less sensitive to rewards, which provide important feedback,\u201d She added.<\/p>\n<p>Antidepressants make up a $17 Billion industry annually. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/en\/news-release\/2022\/10\/13\/2533775\/28124\/en\/Depression-Drugs-Global-Market-Report-2022-Emergence-of-Novel-Techniques-for-the-Development-of-Antidepressants-With-Minimal-Side-Effects-Presents-Opportunities.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">set to grow<\/a> To nearly $22 Billion per Year by 2027 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/products\/databriefs\/db377.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Figures<\/a> It has been shown that only 13% of American adults are taking antidepressants every year. But, this rate is significantly higher for women who receive the medication almost 18%.<\/p>\n<p>This study is the latest in a series of studies by researchers trying to determine how antidepressants can help people. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41380-022-01661-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">systematic umbrella review<\/a> Last summer was the end of all that had been. \u201cchemical imbalance\u201d This narrative posits that depression may be caused by abnormalities in serotonin levels in the brain.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalnewstoday.com\/articles\/321140#The-Lancet-review:-The-final-word?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> Although some patients experienced an improvement with the medication, it is not clear what the mechanism was. The new study may provide insight into the function of these receptors, which could be helpful for people with mood regulation issues.<\/p>\n<p>66 volunteers were randomly assigned to receive either escitalopram (a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) or a placebo over 21 days. To assess their cognitive function, questionnaires were filled out before and after the trial. The participants in the escitalopram trial were tested by blood.<\/p>\n<p>In questionnaires, the participants taking the drug reported having more trouble achieving an orgasm while having sex \u2014 a side-effect often reported by antidepressant users. These findings can help patients make informed decisions about their treatment plans and determine whether the side effects are worth it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt least they can be aware of this,\u201d Sahakian said. \u201cSome people can be offered different forms of treatment, particularly if they\u2019ve not come into hospital with severe illness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the team administered a \u201clearning task\u201d Tests were administered to participants. They found that participants in antidepressant groups had lower responses to negative and positive feedback than the control group. This suggested that the drug might have reduced their sensitivity to rewards.<\/p>\n<p>Another battery of tests, which assessed memory and attention, showed that the drug did not make any difference. \u201cThe drug isn\u2019t doing anything negative to cognition \u2014 from that point of view it\u2019s very good,\u201d said Sahakian.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Christelle Longley, another lead researcher at the University of Cambridge added: \u201cOur findings provide important evidence for the role of serotonin in reinforcement learning.
