Members of Congress were ostensibly there to grill Ticketmaster\u2019s parent company Live Nation over its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/01\/24\/arts\/music\/ticketmaster-taylor-swift-senate-hearing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cmonopoly\u201d<\/a>\u00a0Power and poor business practices have caused website crashes, ticket fees and long wait times, as well as increased ticket prices. After the anger caused by the ticket distribution company, legislators deemed an antitrust inquiry necessary.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/digital\/news\/taylor-swift-crash-ticketmaster-site-1235433274\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">millions of fans<\/a>\u00a0with its online meltdown after tickets to Taylor Swift\u2019s Eras Tour recently went on sale.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the seriousness of the investigation into Ticketmaster&#8217;s, the legislators who led the hearing frequently interrogated with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/01\/24\/senators-use-cringey-taylor-swift-puns-at-ticketmaster-hearing\/?utm_campaign=SocialFlow&#038;utm_medium=SocialFlow&#038;utm_source=NYPTwitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">performative puns<\/a>\u00a0and cringey zingers from Swift\u2019s songs. \u201cMay I suggest, respectfully, that Ticketmaster ought to look in the mirror and say, \u2018I\u2019m the problem. It\u2019s me,\u2019\u201d said Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal, quoting one of Swift\u2019s latest hits. These soundbites are so cringe-inducing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenBlumenthal\/status\/1617970544715993088?s=20&#038;t=0d1g9ly5yEdk4ToBLOwdGw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">quickly posted<\/a>\u00a0on the legislators\u2019 respective social media pages, amplified by the corporate media, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hannity.com\/media-room\/you-need-to-calm-down-twitter-cant-get-enough-of-senators-quoting-taylor-swift-at-ticketmaster-hearing\/?utm_source=socialflow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">celebrated by Twitter users<\/a>\u00a0who don\u2019t appreciate the irony of members of Congress calling out others for running a corrupt and dysfunctional organization.<\/p>\n<p>However, the\u00a0attempts to appeal to the youths are not just cringey, they expose how much performative nonsense perverts serious hearings. Americans are becoming increasingly concerned about Ticketmaster.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/11\/18\/technology\/live-nation-ticketmaster-investigation-taylor-swift.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">could very well be in violation of U.S. law<\/a>. Will Congress act to quell the ire of pop star lovers and save Americans from another?\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/01\/16\/its-official-the-118th-congress-will-do-jack-all-to-stop-big-techs-abuses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">out-of-control company<\/a>? History has shown that history is not in favor of this. <\/p>\n<p>Swifties in distress were denied the opportunity to see their idols on stage long before the Obama-era Department of Justice. This was also more than a decade before the Obama-era Department of Justice.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-2010-jan-26-la-fi-ct-ticketmaster26-2010jan26-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">-facilitated<\/a> Live Nation and Ticketmaster Entertainment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/Archives\/edgar\/data\/1335258\/000119312510012287\/dex991.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">merger in 2010<\/a>, Congress hosted a similar inquisition into Ticketmaster\u2019s potential abuse of power. <\/p>\n<p>Pearl Jam, the global grunge phenomenon, wanted to limit their concert tickets at $24 in 1994. <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20221222183658\/https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/pearl-jam-taking-on-ticketmaster-67440\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$18<\/a> With a maximum of $1.80 service charge The band\u2019s concert coordinator, Ticketmaster, which was raking in around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1994-07-01-ca-10895-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$7.5 million<\/a> Annual profits were not enough to offset the high, profitable service fees.<\/p>\n<p>It didn\u2019t take long for the band to cut ties with Ticketmaster, cancel their tour, and, at the behest of the Clinton-era Department of Justice, file an antitrust complaint.
