Pompeo offered a lesson about how to create a realistic American foreign strategy.<\/p>\n<p>The Post attacked Pompeo&#8217;s description of Khashogi being an &#8220;anonymous&#8221; \u201cactivist\u201d rather than a journalist in\u00a0his new book, \u201cNever Give an Inch.\u201d \u201cHe didn\u2019t deserve to die, but we need to be clear about who he was \u2014 and too many in the media were not,\u201d Pompeo wrote.\u00a0Fred Ryan was the Washington Post&#8217;s publisher on Tuesday. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WashPostPR\/status\/1617918861231394818\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">snapped<\/a>,\u00a0\u201cIt is shameful that Pompeo would spread vile falsehoods to dishonor a courageous man\u2019s life and service \u2014 and his commitment to principles Americans hold dear \u2014 as a ploy to sell books.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmericans are safer because we didn\u2019t label Saudi Arabia a pariah state,\u201d Pompeo\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mikepompeo\/status\/1617957497440178176\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fired back.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cI never let the media bully me. Just b\/c someone is a part-time stringer for WaPo doesn\u2019t make their life more important than our military serving in dangerous places protecting us all. I never forgot that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Jerusalem Post published the following: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/middle-east\/the-antisemitic-tweets-of-murdered-saudi-writer-jamal-khashoggi-586820\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a> regarding Khashoggi\u2019s political machinations in April 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Pompeo discussed the Khashoggi scandal and his opinion on American foreign policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a classic example of how we thought in the Trump administration about what we thought about the world,\u201dHe began. \u201cIt was about making sure we kept America secure. And so Saudi folks went to Turkey, murdered Jamal Khashoggi: fact. We accepted that as fact, but it doesn\u2019t change the fundamental requirement to protect America. And so I was in the middle of this; I went in and told the president, \u2018The Washington Post is having a field day; The New York Times is going crazy; the Left is telling the story about Jamal Khashoggi as an American hero when in fact it is a lot more complicated than that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut second, and most importantly, we needed them as a security partner and we need them as an energy and economic partner as well and we certainly didn\u2019t want to hand over the kingdom to the Chinese,\u201d He concluded. \u201cAnd so that series of understandings caused me to be sent by the president to travel, to meet with Mohammed Bin Salman to express our anger at what had happened, right? Nobody likes a murder of anyone.\u00a0But to make clear that the United States and the kingdom were going to continue to be partners. And I took a lot of \u2014 what\u2019s the right word, crap? \u2014 for that personally. But we made the fundamentally right decision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I think you can see what President Biden tried to do when he declared Mohammed Bin Salman a pariah wasn\u2019t in America\u2019s best interests,\u201d He concluded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd so we will have to, more broadly, deal with characters all around the world who have systems that are fundamentally different than ours, but when they are working on things that are in America\u2019s best interests,\u201d He explained. \u201cI talked about this in \u2018Never Give an Inch.\u2019 I worked on a project with the Russians. We took down a terror plot in St. Petersburg. So you could say, \u2018Why do we care about that?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe answer is there were Americans in St. Petersburg, and we, when I was director of CIA, we had intelligence, we handed it to the Russians; they took down the plot and we saved American lives,\u201d He recalled. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t mean we admire Vladimir Putin\u2019s value set; it simply means that you have to be real about the things that matter to the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He concluded:<\/p>\n<p><em>And the inverse, Ben, and I\u2019ll close with this thought, I wrote about this a lot in the book: Sometimes your friends really aren\u2019t your friends either. Take a look at what\u2019s happening in Europe today: We told the Germans: You rely on Russian gas bad things will happen. \u2026Didn\u2019t know what, didn\u2019t know how, but in the end we were spot-on about that. We sent tough messages to NATO and to France, telling them to be serious about protecting your sovereignty.
