(David Kirton\/Reuters)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>AI Talkback Causes Trouble<\/h2>\n<p>Tencent, a Chinese tech giant, was founded in 2017. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/mkt_app\/chinese-artificial-intelligence-robot-calls-communist-party-incompetent_2275905.html\">shut down<\/a> After it began to criticize the Chinese Communist Party, an AI service was created.<\/p>\n<p>Tencent, the video game developer and owner of WeChat offered its users a free service that allowed them to chat with an artificial intelligence character. (Dado Ruvic\/Reuters)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Unexpected behavior by AI is another example. <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20160323194709\/https:\/tay.ai\/\">Tay, a chatbot<\/a> Created by <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.microsoft.com\/blog\/2016\/03\/25\/learning-tays-introduction\/\">Microsoft<\/a> For entertainment purposes, 18-24 year-olds can travel to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Tay was launched in 2016 and was supposed to learn from the users it was talking with. However, after Twitter trolls exploited its learning abilities, Tay started making offensive and vulgar comments. Microsoft <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaljournal.com\/tech-science\/trolls-turn-microsoft-s-ai-chatbot-into-a-hitler-loving-racist\/article\/461028\">shut down<\/a> After only 16 hours, the chatbot was ready.<\/p>\n<p>Vorhies believes the Tay incident was an intelligence operation. It was intended to create machine learning (ML), fairness research in academia, and Google.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is Machine Learning Fairness?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>ML fairness, as applied by Google, is a system that uses artificial intelligence to censor information processed by the company\u2019s main products such as Google Search, Google News, and YouTube, Vorhies said.<\/p>\n<p>Vorhies explained that it classifies all data on the platform to determine which information needs to be amplified and suppressed.<\/p>\n<p>He said that machine learning fairness means that what is available online will constantly change, so results returned to a query might differ from previous queries.<\/p>\n<p>If a user searches for neutral topics\u2014for example, baking\u2014the system will give the person more information about baking, Vorhies said. The system will not provide any information if the user searches for politically sensitive or blacklisted content. \u201ctry not to give [the user] more of that content\u201d Alternative content will be provided instead.<\/p>\n<p>A tech company may use machine learning fairness. \u201ccan shift that Overton window to the left,\u201d Vorhies said, \u201cThen people like us are essentially programmed by it.\u201d The Overton Window refers a variety of policies that are accepted in public discourse at a given moment.<\/p>\n<p>Experts in machine-learning believe that data gathered from the real world contains biases that exist in society. (Laurie Dieffembacq\/Belga Mag\/AFP via Getty Images).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Accuracy May Be Problematic<\/h2>\n<p>Artificial Intelligence (AI) \u201can accurate machine learning model\u201d It allows you to draw on existing data from the real world in order to make informed decisions. \u201cmay learn or even amplify problematic pre-existing biases in the data based on race, gender, religion or other characteristics,\u201d Google: \u201cai.google\u201d cloud\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ai.google\/responsibilities\/responsible-ai-practices\/?category=fairness\">website<\/a>, under \u201cResponsible AI practices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe risk is that any unfairness in such systems can also have a wide-scale impact. Thus, as the impact of AI increases across sectors and societies, it is critical to work towards systems that are fair and inclusive for all,\u201d The site states.<\/p>\n<p>Google has an example of how machine learning should look from a fairness perspective to illustrate this point. <a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/inclusive-ml\">example<\/a> of an app to help kids select age-appropriate books from a library that has both adult and children\u2019s books.<\/p>\n<p>Children may be exposed to adult content if the app chooses an adult book to be read by them. Parents may also be upset if they are reading it.\u00a0However, according to the company\u2019s inclusive ML guide, flagging children\u2019s books that contain LGBT themes as inappropriate is also \u201cproblematic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fairness in machine-learning is the goal \u201cto understand and prevent unjust or prejudicial treatment of people related to race, income, sexual orientation, religion, gender, and other characteristics historically associated with discrimination and marginalization, when and where they manifest in algorithmic systems or algorithmically aided decision-making,\u201d Google states in its <a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/inclusive-ml\">inclusive ML guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sara Robinson, a Google staff developer relations engineer, spoke out about the topic in an <a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/blog\/products\/ai-machine-learning\/building-ml-models-for-everyone-understanding-fairness-in-machine-learning\">article on Google\u2019s cloud website<\/a>. Robinson described fairness in machine learning as the process of understanding biases introduced by the data and ensuring that the AI operates without them. \u201cprovides equitable predictions across all demographic groups.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile accuracy is one metric for evaluating the accuracy of a machine learning model, fairness gives us a way to understand the practical implications of deploying the model in a real-world situation,\u201d Robinson stated.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How AI Censorship Works<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Vorhies is a former Google senior engineer and YouTube executive. \u201cCensoring is super expensive. You literally have to go through all the pieces of information that you have, and curate it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If the Federal Bureau of Investigations, (FBI) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theepochtimes.com\/newly-released-emails-show-fbi-flagging-accounts-for-twitter-to-punish_4929385.html\">flags<\/a> The social media company creates a social media account and then puts it on its website. \u201cblacklist\u201d Vorhies stated that this then gets to the AI. Keywords are crucial because \u201cthe AI likes to make decisions when it has labels on things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Machine learning in AI is made easier by categorizing data groups into categories. The AI for self-driving car uses labels to distinguish between people, cars, streets, and the sky. It labels key characteristics of the objects and compares them. You can either label manually or with software.<\/p>\n<p>Suppressing a person on social media is done by AI based on data labels curated by the company\u2019s staff, Vorhies explained. The AI then decides whether the person\u2019s posts are allowed to trend or will be de-amplified.<\/p>\n<p>Vorhies worked for YouTube from 2016 to 2019 and claimed that they used similar practices.<\/p>\n<p>YouTube, a Google subsidiary had something similar to a \u201cdashboard of classifications that were being generated by their machine learning fairness,\u201d According to the whistleblower, He explained that the AI had a history and current content basis to determine how to label someone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen someone sitting in the back room\u2014I don\u2019t know who this was\u2014was doing the knobs of what is allowed to get amplified, based upon [their] personal interests.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Psychological Warfare<\/h2>\n<p>Google\u2019s search engine considers mainstream media authoritative and boosts content accordingly, Vorhies said. \u201cThese mainstream, leftist organizations are ranked within Google as having the highest authoritative value.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A search for information about a local elections is one example. \u201cthe first five links [in the search results] are going to be what the mainstream media has to say about that,\u201d Vorhies said. \u201cSo they can redefine reality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wikipedia may change its mind about a matter and begin to look into it. \u201cconspiracy theory and not real,\u201d People will be confused as to what to think.
