San Francisco currently has approximately 45,000 residents of color. It would cost the city approximately $500,000 if the plan was approved by 10,000 San Franciscans. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-11641737\/San-Frans-reparations-committee-proposes-5-million-black-longtime-resident.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$50 billion<\/a>. This is $50Billion that San Francisco is currently unable to afford, given the challenges facing the city. <a href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/politics\/san-francisco-set-for-hard-times-as-huge-728m-budget-hole-could-get-worse\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$728 million<\/a> Budget shortfalls over the next two-years<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">It&#8217;s absurd that San Francisco would have to pay $50 billion to compensate for chattel slavery. California, however, was a free state.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">However, reparations can be argued for any kind of slavery, according to the report. The report states that \u201cthe purpose of reparations\u201d should address \u201catrocities committed by this country during the era of chattel slavery,\u201d The \u201crole of government in creating and perpetuating poverty by codifying racist practices in housing policy, particularly during the postwar era of urban history in the 1950s through 1970s known as urban renewal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Cities in the United States that were not slave-free have to pay for slavery reparations, even though slavery was outlawed more than 150 years ago.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Isn\u2019t it unfair to make today\u2019s generation pay for the sins of past generations? Perhaps that is the point.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Aside from the affordability and moral issues associated with this half-baked plan, it also should be clear that this will likely do little to improve the plight of San Francisco\u2019s 45,000 black residents.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In case you\u2019ve been living under a rock for the past few years, San Francisco, which not that long ago was a pristine and prosperous city, has turned into a crime-ridden hellscape in recent years.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The public schools system is failing to educate. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfexaminer.com\/our_sections\/forum\/san-francisco-public-schools-hyper-focused-on-equity-but-failing-black-students\/article_f6b39fdc-5ae9-11ed-a268-377c349e7c90.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">city\u2019s black students<\/a>. The city\u2019s police force is unable to protect the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-12-02\/new-san-francisco-da-jenkins-vows-to-fight-city-s-lawlessness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">city\u2019s black residents<\/a>. And the city\u2019s uber-generous welfare programs and social safety net has made poverty among <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/bayarea\/article\/Incomes-rise-across-S-F-except-for-African-6548522.php#:~:text=The%20growing%20discrepancy%20reflects%20San,with%208.6%20percent%20of%20whites.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">black families worse<\/a>It is better than the alternative.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Suffice to say, despite its very progressive municipal government that has a long track record of championing leftwing redistributionist policies, San Francisco\u2019s black residents are still wallowing in poverty.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This could be because welfare payments such as food stamps or a universal basic income, housing coupons, or stimulus checks do not address the root causes behind poverty.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Although it might sound absurd, it is better to create policies that encourage self-reliance and not dependence on the government.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Since the advent of President Lyndon Johnson\u2019s War on Poverty, the federal government alone has spent close to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texaspolicy.com\/we-know-what-works-in-the-war-on-poverty\/#:~:text=Nationally%2C%20about%20%2425%20trillion%20(adjusted,Poverty%20engendered%20the%20Great%20Society.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$25 trillion<\/a> There have been many redistribution programs. However, the rate of poverty has not changed over the same time period.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The 15-member team \u201cexperts\u201d who authored the San Francisco Reparations Plan are most likely well aware that giving poor people other people\u2019s money does not solve the underlying reasons that poverty is so prevalent among San Francisco\u2019s black population. These people are not content to promote these unproductive plans repeatedly. This makes me wonder: Are these really the best plans? \u201cexperts\u201d They may be hopelessly out-of-touch or have other sinister motives.
