On June 24, 2022, Harmony\u2019s bridge was hacked and $100 million of virtual funds were taken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The FBI claimed that hackers known as APT28 and called the Lazarus Group stole the cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In a press statement, the FBI <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/news\/press-releases\/fbi-confirms-lazarus-group-apt38-cyber-actors-responsible-for-harmonys-horizon-bridge-currency-theft\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a> On Friday, January 13, North Korean hackers used RAILGUN (a privacy tool) to launder ethereum from last year. The amount that was laundered reached a total of more than $60 millions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Some of the money was then delivered to multiple providers and changed into bitcoin, after which\u00a0some of it was frozen through an effort with the providers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The FBI noted that some of its offices, working with other groups, are still finding and interrupting North Korea\u2019s acts of stealing and money laundering of cryptocurrency. It said the criminal actions are utilized in order to prop up North Korea\u2019s Weapons of Mass Destruction and ballistic missile projects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The FBI also stated that it has published a Cybersecurity Advisory together with the Cybersecurtiy and Infrastructure Security Agency and the U.S. Treasury Department in the past. The advisory was discussed \u201cTraderTraitor,\u201d A malware attempt that North Korea used to attack Harmony.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Reuters published June&#8217;s report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/nkorea-may-be-behind-new-100-mln-cryptocurrency-hack-experts-say-2022-06-30\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> According to three digital investigative organizations, hackers from North Korea are likely responsible for the major hack. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elliptic.co\/solutions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elliptic<\/a>, a crypto analysis team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/nkorea-may-be-behind-new-100-mln-cryptocurrency-hack-experts-say-2022-06-30\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">speculated<\/a> Lazarus was named in a report issued at the time the cyber attack occurred.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThe thief is attempting to break the transaction trail back to the original theft,\u201d According to the report. \u201cThis makes it easier to cash out the funds at an exchange.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Last <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/national-security\/3828420-fbi-accuses-north-korean-hackers-for-100m-crypto-theft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">year<\/a>Anne Neuberger is the Deputy National Security Advisor Cyber and Emerging Technology at the National Security Council. <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/3590126-north-koreas-increasing-use-of-crypto-heists-to-fund-nukes-worries-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> She was\u00a0\u201cconcerned about North Korea\u2019s cyber capabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThey use cyber to gain, we estimate, up to a third of [stolen crypto] [sic] funds to fund their missile program,\u201d She made the observation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A few months <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/cybersecurity\/3584512-hackers-stole-nearly-200-million-from-us-crypto-firm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">following<\/a> The Harmony attack <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/national-security\/3828420-fbi-accuses-north-korean-hackers-for-100m-crypto-theft\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nomad<\/a>, another crypto group, reportedly had cryptocurrency \u2014 in the amount of $190 million \u2014 taken in multiple incidents.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Treasury Department <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2022\/04\/15\/ronin-hack-north-korea-linked-to-615-million-crypto-heist-us-says.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">took<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/home.treasury.gov\/policy-issues\/financial-sanctions\/recent-actions\/20220414\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">action<\/a> Last year, new sanctions were placed on a wallet belonging to the Lazarus Group.
