Then Elon Musk acquired the company in October of 2022 and released internal documents exposing Twitter\u2019s key censorship decisions and election meddling.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the revelations material was dubbed \u201cThe Twitter Files\u201d corroborates what these ex-staffers told the J6 Committee about Twitter\u2019s hesitation to ban Trump until Jan. 8. Many documents and communications that were uncovered show that Twitter treated Trump differently from most other world leaders, long before the riot.<\/p>\n<h2>Tweeps agree that Big Tech isn&#8217;t Authoritarian Enough<\/h2>\n<p>Anika Navaroli, a member of Twitter\u2019s censorship team, told the J6 Committee in anonymous testimony in July of 2022 that Twitter\u2019s decision to delay the permanent suspension of Trump until after the riot was \u201cabsolutely indicative and emblematic of Twitter\u2019s hands-off, willfully ignorant approach to the former President\u2019s rhetoric on the service and on the platform.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Similar to hundreds of Twitter employees who wrote about an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/context\/letter-to-jack-dorsey-from-twitter-employees-asking-to-permanently-suspend-donald-trump-s-account\/d9b84fa1-c7cb-4c5b-a90a-fdf167ff0c7a\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">open letter<\/a> demanding the president\u2019s permanent suspension, Navaroli claimed she lobbied for the curbing of Trump long before he was <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2022\/12\/12\/twitter-employees-found-trump-didnt-violate-policies-then-banned-him-anyway-with-corporate-medias-help\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">banned on Jan. 8, 2021<\/a>She was able to speak out, but her demands were not fulfilled. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor months I had been begging and anticipating and attempting to raise the reality that if nothing \u2014 if we made no intervention into what I saw occurring, people were going to die,\u201d Navaroli spoke in an interview with the Democratdominated committee. \u201cOn Jan. 5, I realized no intervention was coming. As hard as I had tried to create one or implement one, there was nothing. Another unnamed member of Twitter\u2019s safety policy team told the J6 Committee that Twitter\u2019s censorship teams weren\u2019t equipped to \u201cfind a rationale to suspend the President\u2019s account from the service, and \u2018stop the insurrection\u2019\u201d January 6.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe team was left to respond to rampant incitement on Twitter under its own initiative, once again without clear instruction,\u201d The committee report adds later. \u201cThis understaffed, ramshackle made [one of the employees moderating content on Jan. 6] feel like she was a security guard hovering over the Capitol, trying to defend the building as the crowd tweeted out its progress during the course of the assault.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s clear from these accounts that Twitter employees tried to find a cause for deplatforming Trump under the Big Tech company\u2019s then-policies. They were not able to get the political results they wanted, so partisan Twitter executives became involved. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bariweiss\/status\/1602365655595962368?s=20&#038;t=zEcDYOQ92NOEQZjN25rlYA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sidestepped free speech loyalists<\/a> Changes to the rules can be made at the company <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ShellenbergerMD\/status\/1601766851050352641?s=20&#038;t=ipRPxN5b1dkoai0x_6yctA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to target Trump alone<\/a>. target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">changed the rules<\/a> Trump and his Democrat allies must be removed <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bariweiss\/status\/1602375132923645952?s=20&#038;t=-zJagYQ7rDgbXQo_tO2XLw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">celebrated<\/a>. <\/p>\n<figure noopener\">publicly praising<\/a> Her for \u201canswering the call of the Committee and your country.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" raised \u201cthe most prominent Twitter insider known to have challenged the tech giant\u2019s conduct toward Trump.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/twitter-whistleblower-jan-6-panel-identity-anika-collier-navaroli-wapo-2022-9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Business Insider<\/a> Amplified Navaroli by the headline \u201cTwitter whistleblower who foresaw the violence of Jan. 6 reveals her identity with an omen for the future of US democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Navaroli\u2019s testimony, along with other witnesses, helped Democrats conclude that \u201cTrump\u2019s suspension ended the preferential treatment Twitter gave his account for years\u201d And that Big Tech failed in its duty to stop violence by delaying its permanent ban against Trump until after the Capitol Riot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe former employee\u2019s testimony confirms that Twitter saw President Trump\u2019s potential violent incitement of his supporters as a cause for concern even prior to Election Day but chose not to take effective actions to prevent him from using the platform in this way. Moreover, this failure to act was consistent with Twitter\u2019s longstanding deferential treatment of President Trump,\u201d The report says so.<\/p>\n<h2>Twitter treated Trump differently<\/h2>\n<p>As Navaroli suggested, the effort to ban Trump permanently may have been concentrated around the Capitol Riot and culminated in a mad scramble Jan. 8, according to Navaroli. Still, as \u201cTwitter Files\u201d Matt Taibbi, journalist <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mtaibbi\/status\/1601357417819754496?s=20&#038;t=_rUu4q1vRLWGKg8tcrGs2A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noted in part three<\/a> of the expos\u00e9, \u201cthe intellectual framework was laid in the months preceding the Capitol riots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Executives such as Twitter\u2019s former head of trust and safety Yoel Roth, Twitter\u2019s former legal and policy executive Vijaya Gadde, and Twitter\u2019s recently fired general counsel and FBI veteran Jim Baker <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mtaibbi\/status\/1601361391679856640?s=20&#038;t=_rUu4q1vRLWGKg8tcrGs2A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spent months <\/a>Building a network that can quickly respond to suppression requests.
