been to the grocery store lately, you\u2019ve probably faced sticker shock on an unlikely product: eggs. Egg prices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/cpi.t02.htm#cpipress2.f.1\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span class=\"s1\">more than doubled<\/span><\/a> From December 2021 to 2022, the average price of an egg in America was $4.25 per dozen. Some areas report that people pay $6-$7 per dozen eggs!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The upside to this is that it has lead to some really funny memes.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Okay I lol\u2019d <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/OP3tvkuHqr\" class=\"stylish-link\">pic.twitter.com\/OP3tvkuHqr<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Brad Polumbo \ud83c\uddfa\ud83c\uddf8\u26bd\ufe0f\ud83c\udff3\ufe0f\u200d\ud83c\udf08 (@brad_polumbo) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/brad_polumbo\/status\/1615868031741341697?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" class=\"stylish-link\">January 19, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\">But it\u2019s left many cash-strapped Americans wondering\u2026 why are eggs so expensive right now?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Part of this is just the overall inflation we\u2019ve experienced, which has its roots in everything from global supply chain issues To the Federal Reserve\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.based-politics.com\/2022\/02\/10\/inflation-surged-7-5-in-january-heres-why\/\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span class=\"s1\">loose monetary policy<\/span><\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frbsf.org\/economic-research\/publications\/economic-letter\/2022\/march\/why-is-us-inflation-higher-than-in-other-countries\/\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span class=\"s1\">excessive stimulus spending<\/span><\/a> Under both the Trump administration and Biden administrations. However, the egg price hikes are too extreme for regular inflation to explain. There\u2019s another reason\u2014and some conspiracy theories, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Some Leftists, like Robert Reich, a socialist academic, argue that egg price rises are due to high egg prices. \u201ccorporate greed.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Egg prices have risen 60% That\u2019s absurd. A dozen eggs can cost as much as $6 to $7 per person.<\/p>\n<p>Why? Corporate greed.<\/p>\n<p>Cal-Maine, the largest egg producer in the US, is raking record profits \u2014 $198 million in its latest quarter.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a 65% increase from a year ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Robert Reich (@RBReich) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RBReich\/status\/1616558694006771747?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" class=\"stylish-link\">January 20, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p3\">This doesn\u2019t make ANY sense. In December 2021, egg prices were $1.79 less than a year ago. Are corporations now more generous than ever? Are they suddenly more greedy?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">It&#8217;s not. It\u2019s an absurd conspiracy theory ultimately motivated by the blind ideological hatred these types have for business.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">The <b>High egg prices are not due to any real reason<\/b>As is often the case, avian flu has its roots in basic economics, supply and demand. An avian flu epidemic has killed more than 43,000,000 egg-laying hens in the United States since February 2022. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ers.usda.gov\/data-products\/chart-gallery\/gallery\/chart-detail\/?chartId=105576\" class=\"stylish-link\"><span class=\"s1\">according to the US Department of Agriculture<\/span><\/a>. That\u2019s resulted in a 29% decrease in the US egg stock, aka the supply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">When a product becomes more scarce yet is still in high demand because it\u2019s part of people\u2019s routines, prices will rise. That\u2019s how the market rations the product to those who want\/need it most. It\u2019s also how the market fixes the shortage over time. These high prices will motivate firms to do all they can to increase supply, which eventually will bring prices down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p3\">Yes, the high egg prices are a problem right now. The good news is that the problem can be explained economically and it will soon get better if we let the market function.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Do you like this article?
