It found that the depression in the females was only reduced by testosterone. However, the study also showed that the estrogen given to the males did not improve their well-being. At least six news outlets highlighted the findings. \u201cgender-affirming care\u201d improves teens\u2019 mental health, without distinguishing between the profoundly different results of females from males.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDepression and anxiety symptoms decreased significantly, and life satisfaction increased significantly, among youth designated female at birth but not among those designated male at birth,\u201d The discussion section of the study is highlighted.<\/p>\n<p>Media outlets, including The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/trans-teens-benefit-from-gender-affirming-care\/2023\/01\/20\/955f807c-98bd-11ed-a173-61e055ec24ef_story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Washington Post<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/gender-affirming-care-trans-youth-improves-mental-health\/story?id=96510337\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ABC News<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statnews.com\/2023\/01\/18\/mental-health-benefits-of-gender-affirming-hormones-for-teens-persist-two-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">STAT News<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.popsci.com\/health\/gender-affirming-hormones-transgender-youth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Popular Science<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/health-news\/articles\/2023-01-19\/hormonal-therapies-are-boosting-the-mental-health-of-trans-youth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HealthDay<\/a>?, and <a href=\"https:\/\/theeagle.com\/opinion\/columnists\/trans-teens-benefit-from-gender-affirming-care\/article_08c37dce-181a-5c2f-a021-b372b104025d.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Eagle<\/a>They were accused of misleading the results of the study and making false statements about the mental health of both genders after they received cross-sex hormonal treatment. The media coverage has been glowing except for the suicide of two participants and the suicidal thoughts that 11 others had to face.<\/p>\n<p>Jesse Singal, the first journalist to be interviewed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2018\/07\/when-a-child-says-shes-trans\/561749\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> The media coverage by leftwing outlets on 2018&#8217;s rapid growth of trans-identification among teenage girl sexes was called &#8220;media coverage of the study&#8221;. \u201cirresponsible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJournalists continue to botch this SO badly,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jessesingal\/status\/1616164935821574147?s=20&#038;t=juqV1kwKLhAeq2Z-5kFMwA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Singal, noting that there are no caveats or weaknesses and that the context is missing for the different outcomes between the genders.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTestosterone and estrogen are totally different chemicals, and [testosterone] is believed to have antidepressant effects,\u201d He <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jessesingal\/status\/1616117717987098624?s=20&#038;t=juqV1kwKLhAeq2Z-5kFMwA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">added<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Androgens (including testosterone) are hormones that give males secondary sex characteristics such as deeper voices, facial hair, stronger muscles, and other traits related to puberty. A lot of adolescent women are prescribed testosterone. \u201cidentify\u201d As transgender \u201cboys\u201d It has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elsevier.com\/about\/press-releases\/research-and-journals\/exploring-the-antidepressant-effects-of-testosterone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">well-documented<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0941950019300119\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mood-boosting<\/a> properties. A 2016 cross-sex hormonal treatment <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4977075\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> Patients with gender dysphoria and androgens \u201ccan reduce mental distress, promoting feelings of euphoria and energy.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Also missing from the study are confounding variables that may have contributed to females\u2019 improved well-being, including the impact of psychotropic medication like antidepressants and psychotherapy, which have been independently shown to improve mental health. Researchers have also <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10508-022-02472-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posed<\/a> A \u201cplacebo effect\u201d Hypothesis in which treatment promises psychological benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Another concerning revelation is the study\u2019s opening line, which reports that \u201ctransgender and nonbinary youth comprise 2 to 9% of high-school-aged persons in the United States.\u201d The 9% figure is a result of a <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article\/147\/6\/e2020049823\/180292\/Prevalence-of-Gender-Diverse-Youth-in-an-Urban?autologincheck=redirected\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021 analysis<\/a> More than 3,000 surveys were conducted on trans-identification in urban school settings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The study was funded in part by a <a href=\"https:\/\/grantome.com\/grant\/NIH\/R01-HD082554-01A1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research grant<\/a> The National Institutes of Health (NIH), which examines the effects of early medical treatment on trans-identified young people. Participants were recruited from well-known pediatric gender clinics, including the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children\u2019s Hospital of Chicago, UCSF Benioff Children\u2019s Hospitals, Boston Children\u2019s Hospital, and Children\u2019s Hospital Los Angeles from July 2016 through June 2019 for the Trans Youth Care\u2013United States (TYCUS) Study.<\/p>\n<p>By design, short-term follow-ups like this two year study are not able to capture long term feelings about medical transition. The Dutch studies are often called the &#8220;The&#8221; study. \u201cgold standard\u201d According to a study, there was no evidence to support medically transitioning trans-identified kids. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/new-study-finds-methodological-flaws-and-significant-risk-of-harm-in-dutch-protocol-for-pediatric-medical-transition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new analysis<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Claims starting at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/researcher-debunks-claim-trans-youths-mental-health-improves-with-gender-affirming-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">past studies<\/a> About the clear mental health benefits \u201cgender affirming\u201d Trans-identifying youth often receive exaggerated or misleading medical treatment. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LeorSapir\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Leor Sapir<\/a>Fellow at the Manhattan Institute, John Davidson found that claims about causality that are frequently cited in news outlets aren&#8217;t supported by evidence.
