The first leak occurred <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2023\/01\/06\/social-security-numbers-jan-6-committee-documents\/\">reported\u00a0<\/a>By the Washington Post, Jan. 6.<\/p>\n<p>Such information, which under federal law should have been redacted prior to the document\u2019s publication, remained publicly available on the committee\u2019s website for days before being removed online on Jan. 4.<\/p>\n<p>The Privacy Act of 1974 provides that confidential data must be protected. \u201c[no] agency shall disclose any record which is contained in a system of records by any means of communication to any person, or to another agency, except pursuant to a written request by, or with the prior written consent of, the individual to whom the record pertains.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The governor said that this was not the right thing to do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have urged both the United States Attorney General and multiple congressional committees to investigate the leaking of my family\u2019s personal information,\u201d Noem made these remarks in her statement. \u201cI look forward to whatever resolution they can provide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the governor sent a letter to Attorney General Merrick Galrland and House representatives to inquire into the possible breach of confidential information. Noem addressed the two separate letters. <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sd.gov\/news?id=news_kb_article_view&#038;sys_id=ba1e28851be4e510b9c24262f54bcb63\">said<\/a> Her family has suffered irreparable damage. \u201cthe families of the nearly 2000 individuals\u201d It was noted in the logs who visited White House in December 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The leak affected many high-profile GOP leaders, including Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, ex-U.S. Secretary for Housing and Urban Development Ben Carson and ex-U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar.<\/p>\n<p>Noem and others affected previously told the Washington Post they weren\u2019t notified about the disclosure.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I fear that this inhumane, unacceptable handling of our most sensitive information could result in permanent and widespread harm to my family, my grandkids, their families, and those of almost 2000 other people.<\/p>\n<p>We want answers. An investigation will uncover them. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6MK6OvoOgA\">pic.twitter.com\/6MK6OvoOgA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Governor Kristi Noem (@govkristinoem) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/govkristinoem\/status\/1616453524119846913?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 20, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Last February, President Joe Biden<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/02\/16\/politics\/donald-trump-joe-biden-january-6-white-house-visitor-logs\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> ordered<\/a> the National Archives to release White House visitor logs to the Jan. 6 panel, denying Trump\u2019s claim that they were covered under executive privilege and thus should not be disclosed to the committee.<\/p>\n<p>In her Jan. 19 letter to Garland, Noem said she\u2019s \u201cglad\u201d of the attorney general\u2019s appointment of a special counsel to investigate the classified documents discovered at President Joe Biden\u2019s home and office space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis action indicates an increased willingness to investigate violations of law, regardless of the political affiliation of the lawbreaker.
