Josh Hawley (R.MO) stated that he would introduce legislation banning TikTok nationwide. He claimed it violates Americans&#8217; privacy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"a8d-pre\"><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">\u201c.<\/span><span class=\"r-18u37iz\"><a class=\"css-4rbku5 css-18t94o4 css-901oao css-16my406 r-1loqt21 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tiktok_us\">@tiktok_us<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>is China\u2019s backdoor into Americans\u2019 lives. It threatens our children\u2019s privacy as well as their mental health. Last month Congress banned it on all government devices. Now I will introduce legislation to ban it nationwide,\u201d The Missouri populist wrote.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>Hawley was a long-serving administrator at TikTok.<\/p>\n<p>Sens. Hawley (R-F), and Rick Scott <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hawley.senate.gov\/senators-hawley-scott-introduce-legislation-ban-tiktok-government-devices\">proposed <\/a>March 2020: Legislation to ban TikTok devices from federal government agencies, citing cybersecurity concerns as well as possible spying by Chinese government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"a8d-pre\">Congress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2022\/12\/20\/legislation-banning-tiktok-u-s-government-devices-1-7-trillion-omnibus-bill\/\">passed<\/a> Hawley\u2019s bill to ban TikTok, which was signed into law on December 29, 2022. The bill was included within the $4.75 trillion, 4,155-page Omnibus Spending Act.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Hawley has questioned tech executives about their companies\u2019 potential compliance with Chinese law that could provide the Chinese Communist Party access to data that could endanger Americans\u2019 privacy.<\/p>\n<p>Public officials and pundits of all political stripes have claimed that TikTok poses a national security risk.<\/p>\n<p>William Burns, Director of the CIA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/clips\/2022\/12\/17\/cia-director-tiktok-is-a-national-security-threat-chinas-ability-to-manipulate-it-genuinely-troubling\/\">said<\/a> During a December interview<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I do. I mean, I think it\u2019s a genuine concern, I think, for the U.S. government, in the sense that, because the parent company of TikTok is a Chinese company, the Chinese government is able to insist upon extracting the private data of a lot of TikTok users in this country, and also to shape the content of what goes onto TikTok as well to suit the interests of the Chinese leadership. These are serious challenges that I consider a real source of concern.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen echoed Burns\u2019s remarks in a December interview, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/clips\/2022\/12\/10\/yellen-there-is-real-national-security-risk-with-tiktok-number-of-ways-it-can-be-fixed-if-its-found-to-be-significant\/\">saying<\/a>, \u201cWell, it\u2019s that private information could potentially end up in Chinese hands and used in ways that would negatively impact Americans.
