The county has run out of space to store these bodies.<\/p>\n<p>King County saw 31 deaths from fatal fentanyl overdoses in January, an average of more than one per day. Over two-thirds (23%) of fatal overdoses in King County were caused by fentanyl last year. The county&#8217;s highest-ever number of fatal overdoses was 1,019\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kingcounty.gov\/depts\/health\/overdose-prevention\/data.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recorded<\/a>KTTH <a href=\"https:\/\/mynorthwest.com\/3788318\/rantz-seattle-running-out-of-dead-body-storage-due-to-fentanyl-ods\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">noted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Medical Examiner\u2019s Office is now struggling with the issue of storing bodies because the fentanyl-related death toll continues to climb. Obviously, they have finite space in the coolers they use, and that space is now being exceeded on a regular basis,\u2019\u201d Recently, Dr. Faisal Khan, Seattle-King County Public Health Director, admitted to it. He also stated that \u201cThe biggest driver of these fatal overdoses involves fentanyl in white powder and in fake pills, which are flooding the streets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Washington Supreme Court will become the Washington Supreme Court in 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courts.wa.gov\/content\/publicupload\/eclips\/2022%2006%2014%20Felony%20drug%20possession%20change%20in%20law%20rocks%20state%20legal%20system.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">overturned<\/a> The felony drug possession law, which ruled that it was unconstitutional to outlaw personal possession of drugs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStatewide prosecutors\u2019 offices were pretty shocked,\u201d Cami Lewis, senior deputy prosecuting attorney for the Kitsap County prosecutor\u2019s office, recalled. \u201cWe had 40 years of precedent where the statute had been fine. \u2026 Law enforcement were relying on it, prosecutors were relying on it, courts were relying on it, and the Supreme Court relied on it. It was pretty shocking for them just to overturn it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have options for temporary morgue surge capacity when our census count gets high, including storing decedents on autopsy gurneys and partnerships with funeral homes,\u201d a Public Health spokesperson told KTTH\u2019s Jason Rantz. \u201cWe\u2019re exploring longer-term options for adding more capacity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Drug Enforcement Administration <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acknowledged<\/a> It had taken over 50,000,000 fentanyl pills and nearly 11,000 pounds of powder in 2022. \u201cThese fentanyl seizures represent more than 379 million deadly doses, the DEA stated, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/onepill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">adding<\/a>, \u201cThe DEA Laboratory has found that, of the fentanyl-laced fake prescription pills analyzed in 2022, six out of ten now contain a potentially lethal dose of fentanyl.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany fake pills are made to look like prescription opioids such as oxycodone (Oxycontin\u00ae, Percocet\u00ae), hydrocodone (Vicodin\u00ae), and alprazolam\u00a0(Xanax\u00ae); or stimulants like amphetamines (Adderall\u00ae),\u201d The DEA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/onepill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warned<\/a>. \u201cNever trust your own eyes to determine if a pill is legitimate.
