This is in reference to the high median salary and rapid growth of payrolls.<\/p>\n<p>The British investor\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tcifund.com\/files\/corporateengageement\/alphabet\/20th%20January%202023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> This announcement comes just days after Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai told the company that 12,000 positions would be eliminated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/the-white-house-brushed-off-concerns-about-mass-firings-at-microsoft-and-amazon-now-google-is-laying-off-employees-too\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">eliminated<\/a> as a result of macroeconomic turmoil and the need to manage costs, affecting roughly 6% of the company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/abc.xyz\/investor\/static\/pdf\/2022Q3_alphabet_earnings_release.pdf?cache=4156e7f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">workforce<\/a> of almost 187,000. Hohn suggested that a headcount of 150,000 would have been more appropriate, as Alphabet has 1.7 million employees. \u201cmore than doubled\u201d Payrolls can be completed in five years. This requires a 20% reduction in total headcount.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am encouraged to see that you are now taking some action to right size Alphabet\u2019s cost base and understand that it is never an easy decision to let people go,\u201d Hohn spoke to Pichai. \u201cUltimately management will need to go further.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alphabet shares fell 24% last year. This exceeds 9% decreases over the S&#038;P 500. It also surpasses 18% declines in the tech-heavy NASDAQ Composite. The Children\u2019s Investment Fund Management held more than $6 billion in shares as of two months ago.<\/p>\n<p>Hohn said that management should be a priority. \u201ctake the opportunity to address excessive employee compensation.\u201d The median pay at the tech company is now $300,000. It&#8217;s nearly seven-fold the national average. \u201ccompetition for talent in the technology industry has fallen significantly.\u201d According to Pichai, top executives will receive lower bonuses starting Monday. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/google-to-reduce-top-executive-bonuses-ceo-sundar-pichai-says-11674515967\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> From the Wall Street Journal.<\/p>\n<p>Another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tcifund.com\/files\/corporateengageement\/alphabet\/15th%20November%202022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> Hohn observed at the close of last year that core offerings were costing more than revenues. Google Search saw expenses rise 18% year-over\u2013year, even though revenues increased 6%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCost discipline is now required as revenue growth is slowing. Cost growth above revenue growth is a sign of poor financial discipline,\u201d Hohn continued. \u201cIn a new era of slower revenue growth, aggressive cost management is essential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>These letters are coming as many technology companies cut headcount in order to recover lower cost structures. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/microsoft-announces-mass-layoffs-to-cut-costs-amid-economic-headwinds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revealed<\/a> Last week, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy announced that 10,000 employees would be laid off. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/amazon-dismisses-thousands-of-employees-in-bid-to-reduce-costs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unveiled<\/a> A total headcount reduction in excess of 18,000 employees. A total of 46,000 workers were dismissed from American technology companies during the first month in 2023, according a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.crunchbase.com\/startups\/tech-layoffs\/#:~:text=More%20than%2046%2C000%20workers%20in,person%20layoff%20announcements%20this%20week.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> Crunchbase says that even though 107,000 positions were eliminated last year by sector firms, Crunchbase still has the data.<\/p>\n<p>Hohn is just one of many investors calling for the sector to be restructured. Brad Gerstner, Altimeter Capital Management CEO, recently spoke out. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/investor-tells-zuckerberg-to-cut-headcount-cool-down-metaverse-push-since-no-one-knows-what-it-even-means\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pressed<\/a> Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to reform the company\u2019s hiring practices and focus on core competencies, noting that headcount had tripled in four years.
