That\u2019s a question getting tossed around the nation\u2019s capital as its NFL franchise hits the block.<\/p>\n<p>Chatter is growing that Amazon\u2019s billionaire founder is looking to clear the way for a purchase of the Washington Commanders by selling the Washington Post \u2014 with speculation boosted last month by leaked video of publisher Fred Ryan <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/12\/14\/washington-post-announces-layoffs-in-tense-town-hall-meeting\/\">disclosing layoff plans<\/a> Unruly town hall meeting <\/p>\n<p>The problem for Bezos reportedly is that the Commanders\u2019 embattled owner, Dan Snyder, is still sore over the storied newspaper\u2019s series of exposes alleging a toxic management culture at the team, where bosses including Snyder allegedly <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/07\/16\/15-female-ex-redskins-employees-accuse-staff-of-sexual-harassment\/\">enabled sex harassment<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Some believe Snyder even suspects Bezos. <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2013\/08\/06\/washington-post-is-old-to-bezos\/\">bought the Washington Post in 2013 for $250 million<\/a>In an effort to sell him the team, he encouraged him to cover the 2020 games with a lot of toughness.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Bezos <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/01\/20\/jeff-bezos-visit-to-washington-post-stokes-fears-of-layoffs\/\">stoked fears about looming layoffs <\/a>During an awkward visit to Washington Post&#8217;s newsroom, at the Washington Post. This was confirmed by a source who has direct knowledge of the matter, but declined to identify the suitor. Another source, who sells and buys newspapers, said that he had heard of the paper being up for sale.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cI think Bezos\u2019 people could go to Dan and say as a gesture of goodwill, \u2018We are selling the paper,&#8217;\u201d A source close to the situation stated. \u201cI think that would go a long way with Dan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Front Office Sports reported that Snyder had hired Bank of America to auction the Commanders. \u201ccontinues to court Bezos \u2014\u00a0even if there are indications that Snyder doesn\u2019t want to sell\u201d To the Amazon founder.<\/p>\n<p>The source said that Bezos hasn&#8217;t hired an investment banker for the Washington Post sale and has not made it clear that it is being sold. The source said neither he nor the source are close to Michael Bloomberg, former mayor of New York City, who according to an Axios report on Dec. 23, is interested in purchasing either the Wall Street Journal, or Washington Post.<\/p>\n<p>Bezos spokesperson said that the Washington Post was not up for sale. A spokesperson for the Journal \u2014 the owner of which, News Corp., also owns the New York Post \u2014 said the paper is not for sale.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/bezos-60.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/bezos-60.jpg\" alt=\"Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos paid a rare visit to the newspaper&#039;s offices on Thursday.\" class=\"wp-image-25439090\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/bezos-60.jpg?quality=75&#038;strip=all&#038;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/bezos-60.jpg?quality=75&#038;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/bezos-60.jpg?quality=75&#038;strip=all&#038;w=512 512w\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos paid a rare visit to the newspaper\u2019s offices on Thursday.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Last week, reports surfaced that the Commanders have taken first-round bids from prospective acquirers and that Bezos \u2014 who reportedly has <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/11\/05\/jeff-bezos-jay-z-plan-to-make-bid-on-washington-commanders\/\">been in talks with Jay-Z to team up for a buyout<\/a> \u2014 wasn\u2019t among them.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Bezos has been very quiet about the Commanders topic, except for a CNN interview in November where he said that football is his favorite sport. \u201cfavorite sport\u201d Lauren Sanchez, Lauren Sanchez&#8217;s girlfriend, also chimed in. \u201cI do like football \u2014 I\u2019m just going to throw that out there.\u201d  <\/p>\n<p>Sports journalists, meanwhile, have been happy to weigh in on behalf of Dan Snyder \u2014 whose disposition toward Bezos is decidedly less enthusiastic, according to reports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot only was I told Bezos didn\u2019t submit a bid, I\u2019ve had people tell me the Snyder family has absolutely no interest in selling to Bezos,\u201d JP Finlay, who is the Commanders reporter for NBC Sports, sent a tweet last weekend. That was in response to reports that the highest first-round bid came in at $6.3 billion \u2014 short of the $7 billion-plus that Snyder reportedly is seeking.<\/p>\n<p>This was also done after an unnamed source <a href=\"https:\/\/profootballtalk.nbcsports.com\/2022\/11\/07\/jets-bears-justin-fields-peter-king-fmia-week-9\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told NBC Sports\u2019 Peter King<\/a> November \u201cIt\u2019ll never happen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), introduced the legislation, which was nicknamed &#8220;The Bernie Sanders Act&#8221;. \u201cStop BEZOS Act.\u201d The article was tweeted by Bezos. Last May, Bezos <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/05\/14\/jeff-bezos-asks-disinformation-board-to-fact-check-biden-tweet\/\">sparred on Twitter with President Biden over taxes<\/a>, demanding a government fact-check on the president\u2019s assertions that low corporate taxes were stoking inflation.<\/p>\n<p>Froomkin maintained, \u201cI can even more easily imagine worse owners for the Post, and that would be a national and journalistic tragedy, as well as a complete betrayal of the assurances Bezos made to Don Graham when he bought the Post in 2013 that he would do what\u2019s good for the Post.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bezos for his part has made it clear that he didn&#8217;t dream of owning a newspaper. Donald Graham, an ex-owner of the Post, requested that Bezos purchase it in 2013. This was to increase online growth and financial stability.
