Bringing it into tighter focus is Vladimir Putin\u2019s decision to pass the winter with ever-more-brutal strikes on Ukraine\u2019s infrastructure and civilian targets \u2014 such as last Saturday\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/01\/18\/dnipro-shows-depths-of-putins-depravity-against-ukraine\/\">murderous missile attack on a Dnipro apartment building<\/a>The accident claimed the lives of six children and many others.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Putin\u2019s invasion must fail. Anything else represents a serious blow to US interests in Europe, to NATO\u2019s stability and to the larger world order. Atop all Moscow\u2019s brutality, the war on Ukraine is as <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/01\/01\/pressure-on-iran-can-help-ukraine-win\/\">much an attack on that order as it is a territorial gambit<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Washington <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/11\/07\/ukraine-needs-more-air-defense-and-fighter-jets-uk-think-tank\/\">is mired in a game of escalation<\/a> that\u2019s lethargic, confused \u2014 and <em>Reactive<\/em>. Yes, we\u2019ve sent Ukraine lots of help \u2014 including lethal aid \u2014 but only after Putin upped his violence first. Even the US \u201cescalations\u201d Are hesitant. For example, our meager Patriot air defense system is not enough to protect the country from all the dangers President Joe Biden has claimed to be concerned about. However, it does have some benefits. The Ukraine requires more Patriots in order to be effective. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>We\u2019ve also kiboshed MiG transfers from regional allies, balked at sending tanks and said no to more advanced tactical missile systems that would greatly increase Ukrainian range \u2014 all on the <em>Theory<\/em> Russia is helping Ukraine strike inside Russia <em>may<\/em> Putin should go nuclear. <\/p>\n<p>It is because he and other high-ranking Russians keep making this threat. <em>Works<\/em> to stop the West doing more.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yet it\u2019s plain that more is required to force Putin to end the war. At the moment, a military defeat seems like the only way to secure freedom and security in Ukraine. A negotiated settlement seems off the table, as the Kremlin\u2019s demands remain \u201clet us win.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Putin\u2019s insane territorial claims would almost certainly exceed anything Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky might agree to, while Zelensky and his government want <em>Everything<\/em> back, including Crimea. Even if the West threatens that it will end its support for Ukraine&#8217;s blackmailing into bad deals, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/01\/06\/ukraines-zelensky-dismisses-russia-truce-order-as-trick\/\">Putin\u2019s record shows<\/a> he\u2019ll break it at his own convenience.<\/p>\n<p>A mild winter (so far) has aided the Ukrainians\u2019 resistance. And the Russian army\u2019s deep-rooted logistical and personnel issues bode ill for <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/01\/18\/russia-readying-quiet-mobilization-of-700000-troops-report\/\">Putin\u2019s rumored coming massive troop callup<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Putin clearly intends to win by outlasting his opponents. He is betting as much on Western might as on any battlefield victory. By holding firm, Ukraine and its allies will be able to defeat this approach. <\/p>\n<p>However, the ultimate victory depends on a strategy by the United States that places Ukraine on the front foot and allows it to forcefully negotiate. <em>Russia<\/em> Not to give up. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How will the Ukraine war end?
