But, these extreme treatments may also have a detrimental effect on children&#8217;s development. These drugs and surgeries mostly benefit the AAP\u2019s members and donors who can use these guidelines to squeeze more money out of vulnerable families.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The AAP recommends a variety of medical treatments to children in order to induce rapid weight loss. These could cause permanent damage to their mental and physical development. One of them is orlistat. This pill stops fat nutrient and intestinal absorption in the digestive tract by inhibiting the release of fat processing enzymes. It costs $803 a month. Semaglutide is another regular injection that lowers appetite and slows digestion. It costs $1,627 per monthly. Bariatric surgery is the most serious recommendation. This is an invasive procedure that reroutes or removes parts of the digestive system to reduce appetite and increase nutrient absorption. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.obesitycoverage.com\/weight-loss-surgery-insurance-coverage-and-costs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">$23,000<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If these options sound dangerous for children, that\u2019s because they are. Vitamins A, D, and E \u2014 critical to <a href=\"https:\/\/ods.od.nih.gov\/factsheets\/VitaminA-Consumer\/#:~:text=Vitamin%20A%20is%20a%20fat,and%20other%20organs%20work%20properly.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">growth<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/nutritionsource\/vitamin-d\/#:~:text=It%20is%20a%20fat%2Dsoluble,control%20infections%20and%20reduce%20inflammation.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bone development<\/a>The, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/drugs-supplements-vitamin-e\/art-20364144#:~:text=Vitamin%20E%20is%20a%20nutrient,E%20also%20has%20antioxidant%20properties.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">immune system<\/a> \u2014\u00a0 are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/eat-well\/food-types\/different-fats-nutrition\/#:~:text=Fat%20helps%20the%20body%20absorb,is%20converted%20into%20body%20fat.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fat-soluble<\/a> Orlistat can cause deficiencies in nutrients.\u00a0 Semaglutide, which mimics the body\u2019s hormones, carries a <a href=\"https:\/\/medlineplus.gov\/druginfo\/meds\/a618008.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">serious<\/a> A Food and Drug Administration risk notice regarding cancer in the thyroid. The thyroid is the organ that regulates most hormones. Bariatric surgery may be the most dangerous. It involves the removal of part of the stomach in order to lower nutrient absorption. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/tests-procedures\/bariatric-surgery\/about\/pac-20394258\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can<\/a> result in malnourishment and low blood sugar, permanently stunting a child\u2019s physical growth and brain development.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The AAP would not recommend such drastic actions when exercise and basic diet are the best options. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7096559\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">children<\/a>? Look no further than the AAP\u2019s list of top <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aap.org\/en\/philanthropy\/corporate-and-organizational-partners\/current-partners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">donors<\/a>, mostly comprised of both ultra-processed-food manufacturers \u2014 whose products make children sick and obese \u2014 and pharmaceutical companies that sell expensive medications to cure them. GlaxoSmithKline is the manufacturer of orlistat and Novo Nordisk makes semaglutide.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rickitt Mead Johnson Nutrition, and Abbott Nutrition are two other top-10 donors on the AAP website. These are the most prominent producers of baby formula. Baby formula in the United States is made from highly processed ingredients. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2022\/09\/30\/why-is-corn-syrup-in-so-many-american-infant-formulas_partner\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">corn<\/a>Our children are not fed milk but milk. <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/infant-formula-change-gut-bacteria-contribute-childhood-obesity\/story?id=55632397\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">14 percentage points<\/a>74% more likely to be obese or overweight than those who are exclusively fed breastmilk, which is 74 percent. These baby formulas are provided by the government. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/formula\/index.html#:~:text=Get%20Help%20From%20WIC&#038;text=WIC%20provides%20formula%20and%20food,WIC%20while%20you&#039;re%20pregnant.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">43 percent<\/a> Our families are not wealthy enough to be eligible for public assistance. This is why some children come from poor families. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7416135\/#:~:text=Children%20living%20in%20families%20with,living%20in%20higher%20income%20homes.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more<\/a> Obesity is twice as common than it used to be.
