Manchin claimed that the fight over the debt ceiling is an opportunity for us to correct the dysfunction surrounding the federal budget process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s a mistake,\u201d Manchin said on CNN of the Biden administration\u2019s refusal to negotiate. \u201cThis is a democracy that we have. We have a two-party system. And we should be able to talk and find out where our differences are. And if they are irreconcilable, then you have to move on from there and let the people make their decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Manchin also criticised Dick Durbin (D-IL), the Senate Majority Whip, who claimed that Biden should not negotiate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just respectfully disagree,\u201d Manchin spoke. \u201c[E]very American has to live within a budget. If they don\u2019t, they\u2019re in trouble financially. Every business that is successful has to live within a budget. Every state has to live within a budget. Shouldn\u2019t the federal government have some guardrails that say, \u2018hey, guys, you\u2019re getting over \u2014 you\u2019re overreaching here and you\u2019re overspending?&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Manchin made a brief appearance on Meet the Press to point out that the budget process had been broken for all of his time in the Senate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been here 12 years,\u201d He stated. \u201cWe haven\u2019t had a budget yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing that holds us accountable,\u201d He went on. \u201cNothing at all. We can say, \u2018oh, we\u2019re gonna do it,\u2019 but as I\u2019ve said before, 12 years, we haven\u2019t had a budget. That\u2019s ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe process isn\u2019t working,\u201d He went on. \u201cHow come we\u2019re not held accountable to have the appropriations bills done at a certain time before the end of the fiscal year\u2026 you know what happens, it rolls over into an omnibus bill at the end, everything\u2019s thrown into it and, \u2018Okay here. We got it guys. Thats it.\u2019 It makes no sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Manchin stated that Congress couldn&#8217;t risk the financial stability of the dollar by raising the debt ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith that being said, how do you get to it, how do you use this moment to get to responsibility?\u201d Manchin pointed out that the interest payments on the debt are almost equal to the U.S. defense budget.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>West Virginia Democratic Sen.
