Kirsten Gillibrand could be facing a stiff Democratic primary challenge from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez or another far-left candidate.<\/p>\n<p>Gillibrand, the state\u2019s junior senator, who was first appointed to the job a decade ago by former Gov. Last week, Paterson announced her intention to run for re-election by 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Two-term lawmaker would be formidable.  Her campaign committee has more than $4million.<\/p>\n<p>According to her most recent filings, AOC has $5.4 million in her campaign war cash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe could do it. Oh, my God, could she do it,\u201d Ryan Adams, a New York City-based Democratic Consultant who works often with progressive candidates, spoke out in support of the AOC challenge. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf she ran for Senate the fundraising that would come in from all around the country would easily make her competitive. And nobody campaigns like her. Everyone would come out,\u201d Adams continued. \u201cThe apparatus that would spring up around her would be unstoppable. There was <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/08\/09\/aoc-not-ruling-out-challenging-chuck-schumer-in-primary\/\">fevered speculation<\/a> Last year, she had the idea of challenging Sen. Chuck Schumer. However, it was abandoned. An ex-staffer for the congresswoman <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/01\/01\/sen-kirsten-gillibrand-would-lose-to-aoc-in-primary-ex-staffer\/\">told The Post last year<\/a> AOC could easily defeat Gilly in a primary.<\/p>\n<p>Bronx Rep. Ritchie Torres is also being considered as a possible opponent. He has a respectable $3.8million in his campaign bank.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are rumblings in his circles pushing him to eventually go for the Senate,\u201d A source close to Torres said that the congressman was not enthusiastic about the idea and is more concerned with growing his seniority in Congress. Torres recently donated $10,000 to Gillibrand\u2019s re-election fund.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/ritchie-torres-16.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/ritchie-torres-16.jpg\" alt=\"Bronx Rep. Ritchie Torres is also being considered as an opponent for the 2024 election.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Tom Williams<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think it\u2019s impossible,\u201d Jeremy Cohen, co-chairman of the New York City Democratic Socialists of America, said of a progressive primary against Gillibrand, adding that the Big Apple\u2019s card-carrying reds would be watching the senator closely to see if she would be a champion of their causes \u2014 \u201clike Bernie Sanders.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The Post did not reach out to AOC or Torres Reps.<\/p>\n<p>Experts believe Gillibrand is vulnerable due to a number of factors. Throughout her career in Washington D.C. the senator has worked under the shadow of Senator Schumer, who is now Senate Minority Leader and an old-school dealmaker. <\/p>\n<p>Gillibrand is known for being a champion for certain marquee liberal causes but she hasn&#8217;t made a name of herself as an advocate. \u201cpot-hole\u201d senator like Schumer or his predecessor Al D\u2019Amato, critics say.  <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2023\/01\/aoc-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/aoc-1.jpg\" alt=\"Sen. Gillibrand last week announced her intention of seeking re-election for the 2024 election.<br \/>\n<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cShe is a policy person on issues which New Yorkers care about \u2014 like women\u2019s issues and reforming the code of military justice \u2014 but the average person in the South Bronx is not thinking about this,\u201d Hank Sheinkopf is a veteran Democratic strategist.<\/p>\n<p>Others noted that Gillibrand, an upstater, didn\u2019t have a natural power base in New York City and was also deflated by a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2019\/08\/28\/ny-sen-kirsten-gillibrand-drops-out-of-2020-presidential-race\/\">lackluster presidential campaign<\/a> 2020<\/p>\n<p>AOC would also have the expected baggage, such as past positions. <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/11\/12\/aoc-defends-defund-the-police-mantra-after-dem-losses\/\">defund the police<\/a>Critique of <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/02\/20\/queens-jewish-leader-slams-aoc-for-suggesting-israel-cages-palestinian-kids\/\">Israel<\/a>She and her opposition to an <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2019\/11\/25\/nyers-say-cuomo-got-played-by-aoc-in-failed-amazon-deal\/\">Amazon headquarters<\/a> Queens. Gov. was almost cost by out-of-control crimes, which were a result of progressive policies.
