Haltigan,\u00a0<\/span><span>Gayathiri Rajkumar was also a co-author in the recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.realityslaststand.com\/p\/social-media-and-the-rise-of-performative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>article<\/span><\/a><span> for Reality\u2019s Last Stand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The paper examined the rise in teens with tics that have no biological cause.<\/span><span> The resurgence in the very rare <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/what-the-recovered-memory-movement-can-tell-us-about-the-gender-affirmation-movement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>multiple personality disorder<\/span><\/a><span>Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is a condition in which one person claims to have multiple personalities. Other disorders include autism, depression and eating disorders. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/at-least-6-of-students-identify-as-transgender-at-one-california-school-district-data-analysis-finds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>gender identity-related<\/span><\/a><span> Social media conditions\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThat rates of teen and adolescent depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1diMvsMeRphUH7E6D1d_J7R6WbDdgnzFHDHPx9HXzR5o\/edit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>risen precipitously<\/span><\/a><span> since the advent of social media and smartphones is likely no coincidence,\u201d According to the authors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The paper suggests that social media platforms like TikTok could be used to promote a more open and inclusive society. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wallaroomedia.com\/blog\/social-media\/tiktok-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>core user base<\/span><\/a><span> Teen girls are at risk, and online communities that glorify mental illness may be a way to encourage them. \u201cspread vector\u201d It is possible for adolescents to choose different disorders in their online personas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWhile posting about personal struggles with mental illness online may be emotionally genuine to some, it is more accurately understood as a behavioral display to fit in and appear unique to others online,\u201d According to the authors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Neurologists have begun seeing patients since 2020&#8217;s pandemic. While many were forced to go indoors and heavily rely on social media, others began seeing them. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/tics-and-tiktok-can-social-media-trigger-illness-202201182670\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">droves<\/a> Teen girls reported experiencing sudden physical and verbal tics. Experts believe that <\/span><span>Teen girls all over the globe have a tendency to be sexy.<\/span><span> started reenacting tics after watching popular influencers with Tourette\u2019s syndrome on TikTok.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>These behaviors are often called functional tics or functional tic-like behavior by neurologists. They appear to come out of nowhere and can be described by neurologists as functional tics. \u201cfunctional\u201d Medicine refers to \u201cno known physical cause.\u201d Tourettes is a neurological disorder that causes repetitive, unwelcome movements and sounds. Functional tics are different from functional tics. It is possible to imitate tics in others by watching them. This is similar to the phenomenon seen in doctors. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.henryford.com\/blog\/2022\/03\/tiktok-giving-teen-girls-tics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>describe<\/span><\/a><span> Witnessing the development of seizures in siblings is something I am proud to be a part of \u201cfunctional seizures.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On TikTok, the hashtag #tourettes has 7.6 billion views, #DID has 2.4 billion views, #borderlinepersonalitydisorder has 1.5 billion views, and both #transgender and #autism have 16.9 billion views.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cUnfortunately, many content creators posting these videos are not medical professionals, but are instead self-identified patients or mental health advocates who often speak on mental disorders with little to no expertise on the matter,\u201d According to the authors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the <\/span><span>Portal for Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). <\/span><span>The most popular content creators are themselves \u201cswitching alters,\u201d A short video that evokes their unique personalities.<\/span> <span>In the past, less than 200 cases (Dissociative Identity Disorder) were reported over many centuries. This was before the famous 1976 TV movie. \u201cSybil\u201d The story featured a woman who was affected by the condition. One had died by the 1980s. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/books\/the-true-story-behind-sybil-and-her-multiple-personalities-1.4268459\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>estimate<\/span><\/a><span> More than 40,000 patients, mainly women, left therapy believing that they had DID.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Recent developments in mental health have led to another set of professionals working in the field. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/abcs-child-psychiatry\/202203\/the-tiktok-inspired-surge-dissociative-identity-disorder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">boom<\/a> They believe that DID is socially influenced. <\/span><span>These authors claim that the novel mental illnesses are now identity signifiers and can be used to create a social media following.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThey may incorporate mental illness symptom presentations they are exposed to in online communities to socially assimilate and build social capital within these communities,\u201d According to the authors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The paper sources the onset \u201cmental health content\u201d Tumblr was a popular social media platform in 2000. <\/span><span>It \u201cprovided users who typically were seen as outcasts\u201d With \u201ca sense of community and belonging,\u201d According to the authors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Tumblr established a policy in 2012 against blogs that promote eating disorders, self-mutilation and suicide.
