But the wet\u2019s getting a lot wetter, as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Scientists now believe that these weather phenomena are not unusual.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe know from climate models that global warming will boost California storms of the future, but we haven\u2019t made that connection with the latest storm systems,\u201d Alexander Gershunov, a research <a href=\"https:\/\/scripps.ucsd.edu\/profiles\/agershunov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meteorologist<\/a> Scripps Institution of Oceanography is a UC San Diego institution <a href=\"https:\/\/scripps.ucsd.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">department<\/a>, said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cAssuming that these storms were driven by global warming would be like assuming an athlete who breaks a record was on steroids,\u201d Gershunov noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA group I call \u2018mediaologists\u2019 always hype the current situation to make it seem worse than the last one,\u201d Gershunov spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Anderson, the state\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/michael-anderson-a24a6310\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">climatologist<\/a> According to the Department of Water Resources (DWR), the atmospheric rivers are a sign of how destructive flooding can be in such a dry climate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cEach of the recent atmospheric rivers were within the historical distribution of sizes of atmospheric rivers,\u201d Anderson\u00a0said, adding, \u201cIt will take further study to determine how warming temperatures influenced the sequence or the sudden transition from dry to wet and soon back to dry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Jayme Laber, senior hydrologist at the National Weather Service in Los Angeles, California, said the storms weren\u2019t larger than what the state has experienced in the past.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cOverall, it was nothing as big as what we\u2019ve gone through before,\u201d Laber stated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cMost recent storm systems don\u2019t hold a candle to the kinds of extreme prolonged storms of the last century,\u201d The outlet was told by Daniel Swain from UCLA, a climate scientist. \u201cThey do, however, point in the direction of the episodes of hydro-climate we can expect to see more of due to global warming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">California has had more rain in the past than it did in the present, as evidenced by the fact that California saw 85.3% of its annual average precipitation in January 1956.
