This was officially canceled last week.<\/p>\n<p>Opponents of the military\u2019s vaccine mandate have long called for the more than 8,400 troops discharged for non-compliance to be reinstated with back pay. The door to reinstatement for these troops had already been opened in Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin\u2019s memo ending the mandate.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the Pentagon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2023\/01\/13\/pentagon-back-pay-troops-covid-vaccine-mandate-00077902\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">confirmed<\/a> to POLITICO on Friday that back pay hasn\u2019t been ruled out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegarding back pay, the Department is still exploring this and will provide its views on legislation of this nature at the appropriate time and through the appropriate process,\u201d Maj. Charlie Dietz from the Pentagon in an email to POLITICO Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Austin\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2023\/Jan\/10\/2003143118\/-1\/-1\/1\/SECRETARY-OF-DEFENSE-MEMO-ON-RESCISSION-OF-CORONAVIRUS-DISEASE-2019-VACCINATION-REQUIREMENTS-FOR-MEMBERS-OF-THE-ARMED-FORCES.PDF\">memo<\/a> Ending the vaccine mandate had allowed troops to request corrections to discharge records. This would have made it possible for them to reenlist. For troops who had applied for exemptions, it provided letters of reprimand or other punishments to be reversed.<\/p>\n<p>The memo stated that troops cannot be released. \u201csolely on the basis\u201d Refusal of the COVID-19 vaccine \u201cif they sought an accommodation on religious, administrative, or medical grounds.\u201d All ongoing reviews on exemption requests had to stop.<\/p>\n<p>However, it still allows for commanders to take individual soldiers\u2019 immunization status into account when \u201cmaking deployment, assignment, or other operational decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Austin was legally required by law to terminate the vaccine mandate via a provision in 2023&#8217;s military budget bill. Republicans opposed the mandate for years, and even Democratic support was limited, Military Times reported. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/12\/07\/pentagon-worries-repealing-covid-vaccine-mandate-will-affect-readiness\/\">reported<\/a>In some cases, Democrats call for its repeal.<\/p>\n<p>Some military officers <a href=\"https:\/\/americanmilitarynews.com\/2022\/12\/top-marine-general-says-vaccine-mandate-hurting-recruitment\/\">cited the mandate<\/a> as a contributing factor to recruitment shortages. In his memo, Austin said the military\u2019s \u201cvaccination efforts will leave a lasting legacy in the many lives we saved \u2026 and the high level of readiness we have maintained, amidst difficult public health conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>This was breaking news.
