This was due to an increase in product prices in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Federal law bans the import of uncooked eggs from Mexico to the U.S. This could lead to penalties up to $10,000 if officials find out that travelers have not declared such agricultural items. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DFOSanDiegoCA\/status\/1615521977611046913?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1615521977611046913%7Ctwgr%5E80480f8df26805d6f9bcf19c41f05eb74e02cdb2%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&#038;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cbs8.com%2Farticle%2Fnews%2Flocal%2Fegg-seizures-at-border-crossings-on-the-rise%2F509-8a870b2e-aea0-4c29-a58a-e3f60c9327fc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy advice is, don\u2019t bring them over,\u201d Charles Payne, CBP Supervisory Agriculture Specialist, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.borderreport.com\/immigration\/border-crime\/egg-seizures-up-at-border-crossings-as-prices-soar-in-u-s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Border Report<\/a>. \u201cIf you fail to declare them or try to smuggle them, you face civil penalties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The latest figures from border officials were announced as the price of a dozen large grade A eggs was $4.25 in December. This is a 140% increase over the same month last years, according to the Daily Mail. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-11653603\/Americas-great-egg-surge-one-eggceptional-chart-Price-doubles-12-months-2-4.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Payne claimed that egg seizures at the border by CPB officers were becoming more common in recent months, despite the rise in dairy prices.<\/p>\n<p>Payne also explained that the steep fines are intended for undeclared agricultural goods, while individuals could face civil penalties up to $300 for illegally transporting these products. CPB officials will only confiscate and destroy eggs if the person transporting egg products informs them in advance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe advantage of declaring it is, we will pick it up with no penalty issued,\u201d Payne spoke. \u201cIf you fail to declare it or if you attempt to smuggle it, there\u2019s going to be a penalty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Border Report also noted that the Economic Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture revealed that the prices for a dozen eggs rose from $3.50 up to $5.30 in the last year due to avian influenza spread.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Daily Mail: More than 43,000,000 of the 58,000,000 birds that were killed last year in order to combat the avian virus were eggs-laying chickens.<\/p>\n<p>Rodney Holcomb, Oklahoma State University&#8217;s agricultural economics professor, said <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/nexstar_media_wire\/3808484-when-will-egg-prices-come-down\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Hill<\/a>\u00a0In 2022, approximately 10% of all laying hens were killed by the virus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a perfectly bad storm \u2013 not a perfect storm, a perfectly bad storm \u2013 of high energy prices, high feed prices and avian flu,\u201d Holcomb stated. \u201cIt resulted in big price fluctuations we haven\u2019t seen since the avian flu issue of 2015, and this was even worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emily Metz (CEO of the American Egg Board trade association) stated that she believes the cost rises in labor and fuel in recent years were more significant than bird flu, which affected egg farmers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re looking at fuel costs go up, and you\u2019re looking at feed costs go up as much as 60%, labor costs, packaging costs \u2013 all of that \u2026 those are much much bigger factors than bird flu for sure,\u201d Metz said.<\/p>\n<p>USA Today <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/money\/food\/2023\/01\/18\/egg-prices-avian-flu-inflation\/11067700002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>\u00a0California and Colorado were the first states to have eggless shelves, while Arizona and Massachusetts now have their own chicken farms.<\/p>\n<p>Metz said to the outlet that the trade organization has seen. \u201csome very, very temporary, isolated and hyperlocal shortages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have not seen widespread shortages,\u201d Metz said. \u201cWe have not seen panic buying or anything like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Egg prices likely won\u2019t drop until the market stabilizes, Maro Ibarburu, associate scientist at the Egg Industry Center at Iowa State University, told USA Today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the absence of new cases (of avian influenza), the production of eggs will gradually increase over the next several months, and that should help with the market,\u201d Ibarburu said. \u201cBut the demand is also an important factor.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>U.S. Customs and Border Protection reported eggs and poultry seizures increased by more than 108% at ports of entry at the southern border between October through December last year amid a spike in product prices in the United States.
