Kevin Ryan, who represents Connecticut\u2019s 139th District, introduced <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.documentcloud.org\/documents\/23573461\/an-act-allowing-children-12-years-of-age-and-older-to-receive-a-vaccination-without-the-consent-of-a-parent-or-guardian.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">House Bill 5480<\/a> This week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe legislation proposed is an issue that has been an important concern for my constituent. As their representative, it\u2019s my duty to express their requests and ensure their concerns have been taken seriously, especially on a health care issue,\u201d Ryan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtnh.com\/news\/politics\/proposed-bill-would-allow-12-year-olds-to-get-vaccines-without-parental-consent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The state House submitted the proposal to the Joint Committee on Public Health. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfsb.com\/2023\/01\/17\/bill-proposes-allowing-12-year-olds-get-vaccines-without-parental-consent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> WSFB-TV.<\/p>\n<p>It is uncertain whether Ryan\u2019s bill will receive a floor vote. The decision will be determined by the state House\u2019s health committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">State House Minority Leader Vinnie Candelora, a Republican, spoke out against Ryan\u2019s legislation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">\u201cIt\u2019s a road that Connecticut keeps trying to push, the Democrats keep pushing this issue and I think it\u2019s really important to have parents involved in their child\u2019s lives so I find the proposal very disturbing,\u201d According to WSFB-TV, Candelora stated that.<\/p>\n<p>Connecticut law requires that anyone under the age of 18 receive vaccines in Connecticut. This is in accordance with current state law. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other\/state-indicator\/state-parental-consent-laws-for-covid-19-vaccination\/?currentTimeframe=0&#038;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> The Kaiser Family Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>To receive COVID vaccines, parental consent is required in 43 states. Most states require parental consent up to the age of 18. Oregon teenagers are allowed to receive COVID vaccines at age 15 without parental consent, while Rhode Island and North Carolina allow vaccinations at age 16 without parental consent.<\/p>\n<p>On February 20, 2022, Democratic California State Senator Scott Wiener <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/health\/2022\/09\/vaccines-for-teens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proposed<\/a> A similar bill was introduced in his state, which would have allowed minors aged 12 and over to get COVID vaccines with no parental consent. It was rejected due to concerns about government overreach.<\/p>\n<p>American Academy of Pediatrics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aap.org\/en\/pages\/2019-novel-coronavirus-covid-19-infections\/children-and-covid-19-vaccination-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stated<\/a> As of January 4, 2017, approximately 17.8 million children aged 12-17 had received at least one dose. 15.2 million have received two doses.<\/p>\n<p>The report estimates that 8.4 million 12-to-17-year olds have not received the COVID vaccination.<\/p>\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/vaccine-safety-children-teens.html#:~:text=CDC%20recommends%20COVID%2D19%20vaccines,years%20and%20older%2C%20if%20eligible.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recommends<\/a> If eligible, COVID vaccines are available for all ages 6 months and over, as well as COVID boosters to anyone aged 5 and older.<\/p>\n<p>Last week&#8217;s data showed that 93% of U.S. kindergarten children received their required immunizations in the 2021-22 school years. This represents a 1% decline nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile 1 percentage point might not seem concerning, that one percent represents tens of thousands of children who are inadequately protected from diseases we can easily prevent through immunization,\u201d Michelle Fiscus is the chief medical officer of the Association of Immunization Managers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewtrusts.org\/en\/research-and-analysis\/blogs\/stateline\/2023\/01\/12\/child-vaccination-rates-already-down-because-of-covid-fall-again\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a>\u00a0The Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p>Recent headlines focused on the concern after measles cases increased across the country, in particular in Ohio, following the nearly complete elimination of the disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis national trend is alarming, especially as we see outbreaks of measles in Ohio among children who are too young to be vaccinated and those who are inadequately vaccinated.
