Glenn Youngkin and other Virginia Republicans have vocally opposed the 2021 legislation. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/lifestyle\/clean-car-ev-standards-virginia-california\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arguing it threatens grid reliability<\/a> Moreover, it forces the state to take unrealistic measures.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As the governor stated, Democrats in Virginia outsourced the decision-making on energy policy to unelected bureaucrats in California,&#8221; Macaulay Porter was a Youngkin spokesperson and made this statement.<\/p>\n<p>Former Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam signed the legislation in March 2021. They reacted in anger when an environmental agency from California took up the cause. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/politics\/california-ban-gas-powered-cars-electric\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">moved forward with a rule<\/a> requiring all new vehicle sales to be electric \u2014 and banning new gas-powered car sales \u2014 beginning in 2035.
