According to the data, Tesla Model S crashed at 7 mph on highways at the time.<\/p>\n<p>The Tesla\u2019s driver told authorities that the vehicle\u2019s \u201cfull self-driving\u201d Software suddenly froze, triggering the pileup.\u00a0The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced at that time that it was sending a special team to examine the accident. This agency typically conducts these investigations into around 100 crashes each year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"a8d-pre\">It happened hours after Tesla CEO Elon Musk had announced that all North American drivers could access the full self-driving technology if they paid for it. The feature can keep up with traffic, stay within a lane and follow traffic signals. \u201cfull-self driving\u201d Namely, human drivers must be ready to assume control at all times.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Tesla warns drivers that the feature is being installed in their car when it isn&#8217;t working. \u201cmay do the wrong thing at the worst time.\u201d Tesla does not usually respond to requests for comments. However, it stated in an update to its vehicle safety information this month: \u201cWe are proud of Autopilot\u2019s performance and its impact on reducing traffic collisions.
