Michael Studeman last week stated that it was unlikely that China would attempt to invade cross-straits. He said Beijing has increased its probes of Taiwan\u2019s air defenses and sent more warships by the island since this summer to also warn off the United States and potential allies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe stakes have gone up,\u201d He stated.<\/p>\n[embedded content]\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.insaonline.org\/detail-pages\/event\/2023\/01\/11\/default-calendar\/coffee-and-conversation-with-rdml-michael-studeman-usn\">He noted Taiwan\u2019s stepped-up security spending<\/a>He said that he would extend the training time for draftees and train them in fighting and operating against invading forces. This was in response to an online event sponsored and hosted by the Intelligence and National Security Alliance.<\/p>\n<p>Studeman shared the lessons that the United States has learned in the fighting in Ukraine with Taiwanese officials, according to Studeman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChina is the number one challenge to America,\u201d Noting the pressure Japan is putting on Japan and the Philippines over their territorial claims.<\/p>\n<p>What has been the most surprising thing to him across his more than 30 years of service has been Beijing\u2019s ability to take basic technology from systems like anti-ship ballistic missiles and transform it rapidly into a hypersonic weapons system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to be really tuned into what they do.\u201d He stated that it means harnessing \u201ckinetic and non-kinetic ways of dealing\u201d With these technological advancements based upon a variety of intelligence.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_100281\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/220802-N-N1405-001.jpeg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-100281\" data-attachment-id=\"100281\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2023\/01\/16\/china-undergoing-build-up-in-every-warfare-area-says-oni-commander\/220802-n-n1405-001\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/220802-N-N1405-001.jpeg\" data-orig-size=\"2400,3000\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{\" aperture \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-100281\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rear Adm. Michael Studeman<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Studeman stated that China is involved in an aforementioned conflict in his opening remarks. \u201cbuild-up in every warfare area\u201d From space and cyber to blue water navy \u201cWe\u2019ll see more of the Chinese navy\u201d It will continue to expand its operations around the world in the future. Beijing is expanding its logistics networks through port access agreements, formal basing arrangement and takeovers in ports of countries that have defaulted with infrastructure loans.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to its expanding navy, China\u2019s 15,000-vessel fishing fleet often pays little attention to exclusive economic zone restrictions. These fishing fleets travel around the globe hauling in fish stocks that are critical to the world&#8217;s food supply. These vessels use the oceans\u2019 size in locations as far apart as the Philippines and the coast of South America to fish illegally.<\/p>\n<p>The government-subsidized fishing fleet is sometimes backed by China Coast Guard vessels to press territorial claims <a href=\"https:\/\/ph.news.yahoo.com\/philippine-food-security-seriously-undermined-by-illegal-fishing-on-disputed-sea-044141593.html\">as it is doing in the South China Sea<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2021\/12\/16\/secnav-del-toro-sounds-alarm-over-chinese-illegal-fishing\">Last month<\/a>, Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro termed China\u2019s illegal and unreported fishing as happening on an \u201cindustrial scale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>China&#8217;s rise \u201cis not a regional dominance issue but a global issue,\u201d Studeman stated.<\/p>\n<p>On Russian Navy\u2019s performance since the Feb. 24 invasion, Studeman noted that it \u201ccontinues to fire missiles\u201d From submarines and surface vessels into Ukraine, but it was the ships <a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2022\/09\/20\/russian-navy-moving-kilo-attack-boats-to-safety-from-ukraine-strike-risk-says-u-k-mod\">are staying close to the coast of the Crimean Peninsula for their own safety<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Ukrainians have come up with very innovative techniques\u201d To strike back. RTS was sunk by the Ukrainians <em>Moskva <\/em>(121), the flagship of the Kremlin\u2019s Black Sea fleet, with Neptune missiles in April. The Russians moved two attack submarines of the Kilo-class class from their large base at Sevastopol in the aftermath. Kyiv used drones this fall to attack Russian surface ships in Black Sea.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Russia\u2019s failings on the ground, Moscow is \u201cplaying a game of throttling\u201d Despite an agreement between Russia, Ukraine, and Turkey guaranteeing the safe passage of these vessels through Black Sea, grain exports from Kyiv were subject to snap inspections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is great concern\u201d Globally, there is concern about a food shortage caused by war.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.usni.org\/2022\/11\/18\/black-sea-grain-deal-extended-by-another-four-months\">Studeman said this gives Russia<\/a> \u201can opportunity to sell their own wheat\u201d While keeping Ukrainian harvests in port. Moscow claims that it did not receive all the fertilizer it was promised to export under the U.N.-brokered arrangement.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed out Iran, which has exported drones in support of the Russian military in Ukraine. \u201cis continuing to support its proxies with lots of weaponry\u201d Like the Houthis in Yemen, to include a variety unmanned systems.
