I rejoice in that diversity and I welcome this way of reflecting it in the life of our church,\u201d Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury, is the spiritual leader in the Anglican Church. <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/anglicanism-england-wales-marriage-religion-5086b3376929156e5f41461193a67aa5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Archbishop of York, the Most Rev\u2019d Stephen Cottrell, also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-64313367\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> BBC Radio 4\u2019s \u201cToday\u201d That \u201cit\u2019s not same-sex marriage,\u201d However, it was marked as a \u201creal step forward\u201d The church.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I want to emphasise is that with these proposals, people who have entered into a same-sex marriage or who are in a civil partnership will be welcomed into the Church at a service of dedication and acknowledgment of that relationship,\u201d Cottrell joined. \u201cThat is a change from where we are at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The church\u2019s compromise <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofengland.org\/media-and-news\/press-releases\/bishops-propose-prayers-thanksgiving-dedication-and-gods-blessing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">position<\/a> It will remain that \u201csame-sex couples would still not be able to get married in a Church of England church, but could have a service in which there would be prayers of dedication, thanksgiving or for God\u2019s blessing on the couple in church following a civil marriage or partnership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Bishops of England will issue an apology to LGBTQI+ persons over this announcement as part of their new announcement. \u201crejection, exclusion, and hostility\u201d They were confronted in churches.<\/p>\n<p>The Church of England will encourage all churches to accept same-sex couples. \u201cunreservedly and joyfully,\u201d It has been updated.<\/p>\n<p>Same-sex marriage has been legal in the U.K. since 2013, but the church\u2019s teaching has remained unchanged. The Church of England&#8217;s new position is in contradiction to the Church of Scotland, who already allows for same-sex weddings.<\/p>\n<p>LGBT rights activists have argued that the church\u2019s announcement is insufficient.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe discrimination embedded into these proposals is what concerns me. It\u2019s very clear that there is a clear distinction in their minds between holy matrimony and civil marriage and that distinction is what causes so many young LGBT people to feel second class,\u201d Jayne Ozanne, a well-known LGBT rights activist, stated that, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2023\/01\/18\/church-of-england-gay-marriage-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>British evangelical leader Ian Paul argued the opposite. He said that although the decision will preserve the traditional definition of marriage it will lead to problems in the church&#8217;s calling for leaders. \u201cbless\u201d A marriage that does not follow church teachings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is going to be no change to the doctrine of marriage. That\u2019s very clear. But the waters have been muddied in quite an unhelpful way.
