She is now suing the school.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Erika Prater, an art professor who was shown the images in a class on Islamic art and lost her job, filed the legal proceeding on Tuesday. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox9.com\/news\/hamline-professor-who-lost-job-after-showing-painting-of-muhammad-filing-lawsuit-against-university\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> FOX 9 Minneapolis-St. Paul<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHamline\u2019s actions and statements may have constituted religious discrimination, defamation, and other violations of law,\u201d According to FOX 9, Prater&#8217;s attorneys said that they represented him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHamline\u2019s actions have caused significant damage to Dr. L\u00f3pez Prater. In the near term, she has lost the income from her adjunct position. She alleges she also suffered significant emotional distress due to her mistreatment by Hamline,\u201d They continued.<\/p>\n<p>Prater distributed a syllabus for the fall class that warned students that the course would include images of religious figures, including Islam\u2019s founder, Muhammad. According to reports, the instructor warned students just minutes before showing the images to make sure they didn&#8217;t leave the class.<\/p>\n<p>As The Daily Wire stated previously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/hamline-university-apparently-fires-professor-over-medieval-muhammad-paintings\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>The professor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hamlineoracle.com\/10750\/news\/who-belongs\/\">showed<\/a> Two paintings, including a 14th-century famous painting depicting Muhammad and Gabriel, and a 16th century painting of Muhammad with a veil &#038; halo.<\/p>\n<p>Senior students in the course complained about the professor to school leaders who eventually decided to end their relationship with him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn lieu of this incident, it was decided it was best that this faculty member was no longer part of the Hamline community,\u201d David Everett,\u00a0Hamline\u2019s associate vice president for inclusive excellence, told\u00a0The Oracle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not our intent to place blame; rather, it is our intent to note that in the classroom incident \u2014 where an image forbidden for Muslims to look upon was projected on a screen and left for many minutes \u2014 respect for the observant Muslim students in that classroom should have superseded academic freedom,\u201d Fayneese Miller, president of Hamline University <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/news\/2023\/01\/03\/debates-whether-academic-freedom-includes-images-offensive-muslims\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> Students receive a December newsletter.<\/p>\n<p>Christiane Gruber, an Islamic art professor at the University of Michigan spoke out in support of the professor and started a Change.org campaign. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/petition-in-support-of-the-dismissed-hamline-instructor-wrongly-accused-of-islamophobia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">petition<\/a> to contact the instructor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough conflation or confusion, Hamline has privileged an ultraconservative Muslim view on the subject that happens to coincide with the age-old Western cliche that Muslims are banned from viewing images of the prophet,\u201d Gruber <a href=\"https:\/\/newlinesmag.com\/argument\/academic-is-fired-over-a-medieval-painting-of-the-prophet-muhammad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Hamline was also contacted by FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression) to return Prater.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn instructor\u2019s right to navigate difficult material\u2014like whether to display a historical painting of Muhammad when many Muslims believe Muhammad \u2018should not be pictured in any way\u2019\u2014is well within Hamline\u2019s commitment to protect academic speech that may \u2018potentially be unpopular and unsettling,\u2019\u201d The instructor was supported by the organization.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Hamline University professor who was fired after showing images of Muhammad in her art class is now reportedly filing a lawsuit against the school.
