According to the agency any discrepancy in Democratic and Republican fundraising email being marked as spam was not intentional. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/google-didnt-show-bias-in-filtering-campaign-ad-pitches-fec-says-11673918655?mod=hp_lead_pos4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Commission\u2019s bipartisan decision to dismiss this complaint reaffirms that Gmail does not filter emails for political purposes,\u201d Google spokesman Jos\u00e9 Casta\u00f1eda told WSJ. \u201cWe\u2019ll continue to invest in our Gmail industry-leading spam filters because, as the FEC notes, they\u2019re important to protecting people\u2019s inboxes from receiving unwanted, unsolicited, or dangerous messages.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In April, the Republican National Committee (RNC), filed a FEC complaint against Google. The GOP group cited March 2022. <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2203.16743.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> by North Carolina State University\u2019s Department of Computer Science researchers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe study\u2019s findings are shocking,\u201d The RNC <a href=\"https:\/\/prod-static.gop.com\/media\/documents\/RNC_NRSC_NRCC_-_Complaint_Against_Google_04.26.22_1651002862.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">complaint<\/a> says. \u201cAll three services displayed some disparity, with Outlook marking Democrat emails as spam approximately 27% more than Republican emails, and Yahoo marking Democrat emails as spam approximately 14% more. In comparison, however, Google\u2019s Gmail truly stands apart, as it marked Republican emails as spam at more than an 820% higher rate than it marked emails from Democrat candidates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoreover, Gmail\u2019s disparity increased as Election Day neared, with the percentage of Republican candidate emails marked as spam going up, while the percentage of Democrat emails marked as spam stayed constant,\u201d It will continue. \u201cThe study also finds that Gmail continued to mark Republican emails as spam even after users opened and read similar messages. This means that Gmail effectively blocked users from receiving messages from Republican candidates, even after those users took actions indicating that they wanted to receive them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FEC concluded that the disparity was not intentional; it happened as a result of Google\u2019s spam filter that is meant to target malware, phishing scams, and other abusive or dangerous online behavior.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThough the NCSU Study appears to demonstrate a disparate impact from Google\u2019s spam filter, it explicitly states that its authors have \u2018no reason to believe that there were deliberate attempts from these email services to create these biases to influence the voters,\u2019\u201d According to WSJ the FEC wrote to Google in a letter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Election Commission (FEC) has dismissed a complaint from Republican groups alleging that Google unfairly targeted GOP fundraising campaigns by marking emails as spam at a far higher rate than those sent by Democrats.
