My choice is to stay true to myself and my religion,\u201d Provorov spoke to reporters after the match.<\/p>\n<p>Provorov said that he believes in Russian Orthodox Christianity, but made no comments.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI respect everybody and I respect everybody\u2019s choices. My choice is to stay true to myself and my religion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Flyers defenseman Ivan Provorov refused to wear a rainbow jersey during warm-ups \u201cPride Night\u201d Because of his Russian Orthodox faith. <br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/wCUl8slmRB\">pic.twitter.com\/wCUl8slmRB<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Greg Price (@greg_price11) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/greg_price11\/status\/1615565477043965954?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 18, 2023<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Flyers head coach John Tortorella defended Provorov\u2019s decision to stand for his convictions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s being true to himself and to his religion. \u2026 It\u2019s one thing I respect about Provy, he\u2019s always true to himself,\u201d Tortorella <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/greg_price11\/status\/1615572273133457408\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Tortorella was also asked by a reporter whether he would consider keeping Provorov out the game because of this decision. The Flyers coach responded no to the question, and declined other questions.<\/p>\n<p>Provorov continued to play following the Pride Night festivities. The Flyers beat the Ducks 5-2.<\/p>\n<p>Many hockey fans were divided by the issue. I also respect peoples [sic] choices, but that doesn\u2019t mean I have to support them. Way to go Ivan!\u201d One user <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KroskeMichael\/status\/1615713834861498369\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Although the Flyers issued a statement after the game, they did not mention Provorov.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Philadelphia Flyers organization is committed to inclusivity and is proud to support the local LGBTQ+ community,\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/frank_seravalli\/status\/1615538360109666304\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> said. \u201cMany of our players are active in their support of local LGBTQ+ organizations, and we were proud to host our annual Pride Night again this year. The Flyers will continue to be strong advocates for inclusivity and the LGBTQ+ community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not the first time Pride Night festivities have divided professional athletes. At least five Tampa Bay Rays players were injured in June <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/rays-pitcher-who-did-wear-pride-night-logo-defends-teammates-for-opting-out-different-beliefs-exist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">refused<\/a> to wear rainbow-themed logos as part of the team\u2019s Pride Night promotion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a hard decision,\u201d Jason Adam is the pitcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/gay-pro-baseball-player-loses-it-over-rays-refusing-to-wear-lgbtq-pride-night-logo-trashes-faith-concerns-deems-players-homophobic\">said<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cBecause ultimately we all said what we want is them to know that all are welcome and loved here. But when we put it on our bodies, I think a lot of guys decided that it\u2019s just a lifestyle that maybe \u2014 not that they look down on anybody or think differently \u2014 it\u2019s just that maybe we don\u2019t want to encourage it if we believe in Jesus, who\u2019s encouraged us to live a lifestyle that would abstain from that behavior, just like (Jesus) encourages me as a heterosexual male to abstain from sex outside of the confines of marriage.
