Council on Tuesday voted to override Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser\u2019s veto of an update to the district\u2019s criminal code which will reduce sentences for carjackings, robberies, and gun-related felonies in the nation&#8217;s capital.<\/p>\n<p>The all-Democratic council voted 12-1 for Bowser who vetoed the &#8220;sham&#8221; she called &#8220;a complete overhaul of our criminal code&#8221; That would make it less safe. Some sentences for gun charges were reduced to less than five year in the revised code. Trayon White (D.), a Councilmember, has been <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/politics\/dc-city-council-member-blames-snowfall-jews\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accused<\/a> Jews who control the weather cast their vote in support of the mayor.<\/p>\n<p>D.C. recorded 226 murders in 2021, its highest murder rate for more than 18 years. In the last five years, there has been a spate of carjackings. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wusa9.com\/article\/news\/local\/dc\/dc-council-candidate-nate-fleming-carjacked\/65-86dd5f98-3146-4016-970e-8139bdf9360c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">city council candidates<\/a>  <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/latest-news\/not-even-nfl-players-are-safe-in-muriel-bowsers-dc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pro-athletes<\/a> alike.<\/p>\n<p>Even the liberal <em>Washington Post<\/em> Editor&#8217;s board <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2023\/01\/15\/dc-crime-bill-dangerous\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warned<\/a> The revised code would allow the city to be recognized as such &#8220;more dangerous&#8221; In a Sunday editorial<\/p>\n<p>The council approved the changes to criminal code in November. They will now send it to Congress for approval.
